Hairspray 2

And in that category of Sequels you didn’t ask for, New Line has managed to convince original Hairspay scribe John Waters to come up with a treatment for Hairspray 2.

Comingsoon says:

Planning to return are director/choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write new songs for the film.No cast has been engaged yet, and none of the stars of Hairspray had sequel options. But the studio hopes to reunite the original cast in a film that will be ready for release by Warner Bros. in mid-July 2010.

I do like that they are getting the guy who wrote the story to begin with to take on the sequel. He is already intimately aware of all the characters beyond anything a fan could grasp. But then who says that Hairspray 2 would even HAVE any of the original cast. Remember Grease 2?

I can see how this would be considered a good idea to the Hollywood machine. Hairspray was a success, and a great movie. I just love it to death. So it makes sense that Hollywood would attempt to target the same crowd and get another does of money.

Nikki Blonsky was so appealing in this movie that you would expect it to catapult her to fame, but so far she’s been off the radar. Could she return to give us more of that boundless energy she brought to the 2007 film?

I get pretty skeptical about sequels to begin with. But the producing team is the same so with any luck we might just get something special here.

  1. I would love to see a sequel to Hairspray. It was one of my favorite movies but if they don’t cast the oringal cast members then it won’t work. Look at Grease 2 and Dirty Dancing. I guess we will have to wait and see.

  2. I really do think Hairspray 2 should happen. In High School Musical 1 it ended the same way and no one ever expected a second but they did it. If they don’t have the same cast it would not be as fun as the first one.

  3. Let’s look at Grease 2 shall we? Now only one of the ORGINAL cast was in it and the move was very innaproriate and gross. Now this is one of my favorite moves(Besides Mamma Mia and the slew of Harry potter movies.) and I really think John Waters should think about what his hit will turn into with a sequel.

  4. i think having a sequel has its pros and cons.
some sequels are like part2 of the first movie while other sequels are different cast, as in the story of a different person, but yeah..somehow i sometimes don’t see the connection between the first and the sequel.
    dang.

  5. HAIRSPAY 2!! THAT IS SO HIP.I HAVE WATCHED THIS MOVIE LAKI LITERALLY 100 TIMES. IT WOULD BE A DREAM CVOME THROUGH.WHAT CAN I SAY I LOVE MUSICALS SO BACK OFF. THE ORIGINAL CAST WOULD BE A PLUS

  6. There are going to have the orignal cast members. I saw nikki blonsky the other day and she told SHE was goin to start shooting it this summer.

  7. I haven’t read this whole thread, however I have some thoughts on a second Hairspray movie.

I haven’t seen all of the original movie, however I do know that it’s not a musical.

I have seen the Broadway/stage version of Hairspray, which was fenominal. Because of this I was slightly disappointed with the movie since they left out about three or four songs from the show.

My only problem with John Waters writing the sequel is that it will be more like the original than the recent one. ie: No musical numbers (which was my favorite part). Having the newest cast in the sequel would also be favorable…

  8. I absolutely ADORE hairspray!!! i know every line, song, scene, lyrics, everything!!! but aside from the very funny acting, i loved the movie because of the lesson it taught… i am for intergration and that was one of the reasons i saw the movie… if the second hairspray were to come out, i hope it’d somewhat like the first, but with more dancing, singing, comedy, and a deeper meaning to life and to apprieciate it :D

  9. I know sequels can be good, but they also can be bad. I love Musicals, and Hairspray is one of my favorites, but what is the storyline going to be?! Do Link and Tracy have kids? Does Amber end up with anyone? What about Seaweed and Penny?! And now theres talk of a different cast>>WTH???!!! I can understand John Travolta turning down the role of the mom, alots happened to his family, but I hated Grease 2, yes, a few of the original cast members were in it, but it was stupid, and corny and cheesy. I dont want Hairspray to be torn to shreds because people got all wrapped up in writing a bad sequel. Now, I will remain a fan of Hairspray, and the writers, and the whole community of it, but I hope they know what they’re doing.

  10. I think Hairspray 2 will be awesome!!!! Hairspray’s my favorite movie ever (after that Enchanted and 27 Dresses). If one person from the cast was changed,I wouldn’t like it as much! The original cast and movie………….not so much. :-D

  11. PLEASE HAVE THE ORIGINAL CAST! JOHN TRAVOLTA ISN’T AND HAIRSPRAY 2?? HE WAS THE BIG CAKE ON THE ICING IN THIS MOVIE AND I HATE TO SEE HIM GO..

    WHY?

BUT IF HE’S NOT PLAYING EDNA, THEN JUST PLEASE HAVE THE REST OF THE ORIGINAL CAST.. AND DON’T CHANGE ZAC’S HAIR AND TURN HIM WEIRD. HIS LOOK IN THE 1ST FILM LOOKED FINE TO ME. IN FACT HE WAS GORGEOUS! AND NIKKI, NO NIKKI, NO HAIRSPRAY 2 SHE’S GREAT!

    (DON’T CHANGE ZAC’S HAIR:-p)

KEEP THE CAST PEOPLE! IT’S NOT HAIRSPRAY WITHOUT. AND I HOPE THIS SEQUEL IS BETTER.

  12. @Jess, hate to blow your theory to shreds, but there wasn’t a broadway musical when they made Hairspray…. that came after. So this sequel is simply a followup to a hit film, and not based on the broadway adaptation at all.

The musical is based on the 80s film.

  13. what the hell?
are they forgetting that there isn’t a hairspray 2 to begin with?
if they want to do a broadway-based movie where there is a sequel, at least do wicked and then try to do something with son of a witch.
i thought the ’07 hairspray movies sucked, especially compared to the play and the original 1980s film.

if they make hairspray 2, they better have them singing “mama, i’m a big girl now” and/or “cooties” in a scene, not the credits.

  14. why dont everyone who thinks hairspray 2 wont be good go into one corner and the ppl who think it wiill be ok go into a another. I think ppl will like it either way not because of the story line but because of zac efton…. but by then who know that he will be even popular anymore… its like when spice girls brought out a movie they didnt watch it cause it was going to be good but because they were in it~~

  15. OMG!!! I just found out that there was going to be a Hairspray 2!! I am sooo excited!!!!

But it sucks that i have to wait a whole entire year for it to release. That would be awsome if the original cast members came back to do the film. I don’t think it would be the same without them . . .actually I know it wouldn’t be the same without them.

I loved Queen Latifah in it. She was awsome!! I definately want her in the film and EVERYBODY!!!! Michelle Pfeiffer, John Travolta, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, etc. I love them all!

PLEASE ORIGINAL CAST MEMBERS, PLEASE CONSIDER BEING IN HAIRSPRAY 2. IT WOULDN’T BE THE SAME WITHOUT YOU GUYS!!!

  16. hmm.. wondering.. you guys think the cast of hairspray will read this? cuz probably their were busy acting for next movie and others. lol.

anyways, im a small fan =I and this movie change my love relationship. sweet and flawless movie. sure i will support this movie. =D

  17. Yes, I saw Grease 2…. Well watched it till it made me cry which I believe was after the 1st song…..
I LOVE hairspray…. Huge fan. Broadway, the OLD movie, the NEW one… And I am curious to see what this one is…. Just the way I was curious about Grease 2…. I am hoping that it doesn’t suck as badly as Grease 2 did. Some movies do deserve a second. Look at Priates, Shrek… But, they have to be done right.
I agree with most people saying that it would be a wise decision to have the original cast.

  18. i loved hairspray. the only things i didn’t like were Nikki Blonsky because she is a horrible dancer and so annoying you want to slap her and Amanda Bynes voice her acting and humor was pretty good though. if they make a sequel i might watch it if Zac Efron and queen latifah are still in it but i really am not a fan of musical sequels. thinking of Grease 2 makes me shudder.

  19. hi everyone

i love hairspray that much i watch it over and over and i know good morning baltiomore of by heart

    tash

  20. OMG my BFFL just commented on this story! We totally do EVERYTHING together! When hairspray 2 comes out we are so totally going to see it! We are like diehard HSM fans and even though he doesn’t like Zac Efron i so totally want to marry him! Oh and i know James Marsden! His son is my little brothers BFF at school! We like totally hang out! So anywho tootles!
    ~Love yeah bitches!~
~Rate it even if you hate it!~
    ~Falula~

  21. OMG! Im so excited for this movie! If the origional cast isn’t in the movie i will DIE! No one can can be better than Niki! Link could be better without Zac Efron because i just watched Hairspray on broadway and Mathew Ragas was amazing! he had such an amazing voice and he was just so yummy! So yeah i’m really excited for the movie and i cant wait for the soundtrack! I totally need some new songs to sing! Anywho kisses!
    ~Stay funky new york!~
    ~Frank~

  22. I’m all for Hairspray 2, as long as they don’t kill the concept by just making some pile of crud just to cash in.

One of the crappest sequels i’ve ever seen is Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights.

It’s got absolutely nothing to do with the 1st film, they just tried to cash in on the name, and thats when sequels piss me off.

Make it good, and i’ll quite happily pay to see it.

  23. I think Hairspray 2 is a really good idea i Loved the movie and the broadway version. I personally think that they should keep the original cast but add new people of course just so it is not like the first one. I do not get why everyone is comparing this to grease when they are two totally different movies. In grease they had to change the original cast because they were seniors in the first one, I mean why would you want to see the same people it would just ruin the movie because then you know they got left back. This is so different and I think they should make Hairspray 2.

  24. I hope they do a sequal. Because I would love to audition for a part. But the really should reunite the whole cast, and of corse some new members too because although I’m a huge Michelle Pfeiffer fan, Greese 2 was kind of a dud. :( which is sad.

  25. I love hairspray. It is my favorite musical. I have seen it live on Broadway, and I have seen the movie. I do not think that there should be a sequel. It would not do well. I don’t think that it would be good to the name of hairspray to have that sequel.

    Don’t do the sequel!

  26. Once they make an awesome movie, why change anything? When you get something right the first time, do you go back and do it again? NO! Disney is REALLY bad at this. For example, the Little Mermaid. The original was perfect but the 2nd, 3rd…Are REALLY AWFUL. I know that some movies make really good sequels, like Toy Story and Star Wars, but other movies, are really bad. Hairspray and Grease, both of my favorite movies, are very similar; they are both musicals and both set in the past. When Grease 2 came out, I was expecting a continuation of the original, however I believe that if it had been given it’s own name, it would of been a better film. Sequels are a way to pull people towards seeing the movie. Producers use movie titles that did very well in the box office and add a 2 at the end of it. Doing this, the people who saw the original and liked it, are much more likely to go see the second one. I, no matter how bad the ratings, will go see Hairspray 2 in theaters, but I hope this sequel, along with hundreds of other sequels, doesn’t flop.

  27. oh yeah and brittny snow is a bitch to nikki blonsky same with michelle pfeiffer i wish they would get off tracys back with all the insolts adn my mom would be graet at the bitchy but not a singing and she cant remeber a thing. like lol. she dosent have amnesia

  28. i think they should put a twist to the movie like wilbur isnt really tracys dad and make it like some one from a really famous movie and i cant wait for it to come out but the sucky thing is it gets realised in 2010 that sucks. and i reacken that penny and seaweed have a kid how funny would that be. like lol. and in the first hairspray i thought i was really kool how they had John.T as a women and even on the real stage its a man in a womes suit wats up with that. like lol. and i know every single song there is to hairspray i watch it over and over again ok i think i should stop typeing know its getting to long man im so excited im going to crap mysefl love all bye.

  29. I think that Hairspray 2 would be fantastic….I loved the first one and I hope they make another!!! I think that the same main people like Tracy, Link, Seaweed, and Penny should still be in it and possibly even the others because I didn’t think Grease 2 made any sense when they switched all the characters around…so they should stay with the characters they had in the first Hairspray…I hope it is made!!!

  30. All of you quit your bitching. If you dont want hairspray 2 then simply dont watch it. I LOVE hairspray not the old version that one is truely messed up but hey thats my opinion. I want to see a hairspray 2 as they had ALOT of unanswered questions and by golly I NEED TO BOOGY!

I have a healthy obsession with hairspray -twitch- and would see hairspray 2 MILLIONS of times even if it is as crap as -shudders- Grease 2.

  31. Hairspray is an awesome movie and I would LOVE to see a sequel to it. Some sequels suck but some are great. Grease 2 wasn’t as great as the original, but it’s not horrible, the story is good and the songs were awesome. I also love that Grease 1 & 2’s main stars are both in Hairspray so I’m in love all the way around lmao

  32. Jeremy, do you have a link or any other evidence that “they” said this.

Google is coming up nothing. All I get are news reports that they are in negotiations to make it all happen and no story has been written yet.

  33. i would like too see a 2nd hairspray but i dont think they will be able to pull it off….there is no story line as they will have to make a new one..but i would like to see if they do

  34. I would love it if there was HAIRSPRAY 2!!! I think Hairspray was an AMAZING film, I adore that movie, but they would definately need the original cast especially the older actors; John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer etc. Because without them I think it would seem like High School Musical set in the 60’s.

  35. My wife and I are huge fans of Hairspray. I am excited to hear that there will be a sequel, but like you am I am skeptical. I am glad to hear the Waters will be writting it. And it has the same song writters. If I had my say I would enjoy a story line that focuses on the social climate several years after the original. Something about Vietnam and the hippie movement could work.

  36. I’m Hairsprays biggest fan I reckon. I’m still obsessed even after so many months and i’d love to see the original cast back. It’ll be a while before it comes out but hopefully it’ll be worth the wait. AND Amanda Bynes and John travolta were awesome in the movie to the person up there. I have never watched grease 2 nd never want to.

  37. i’m excited but also kind of worried because i don’t know what the story line would be. i can’t wait though. hopefully it will be filmed in baltimore because i would love to be an extra.

  38. I love Hairspray (the musical more than the new film, though I like the new one alot) but this is weird. Why are they doing this?? IF John Waters writes it and ALL the cast is back with a new storyline (not just a re-packaging of the same old crap which alot of sequels do) then It can be good.

Actually I’d be glad if they replaced John Travolta and Amanda Bynes, but that’s another story…

And Nikki Blonsky was PERFECT in this role. I would love to see her get some attention cause she hasn’t been doing anything since this. The same with Eljah Kelley! He is very talented.

    1. I think Amanda bynes was really good for Penny.I think She was the best Penny in all of the hairspray movies and broadways.Nikki’s got class like you said, and elijah Kelley can really dance!lol!!!!

  39. I think they should do Hairspray 2 if they can get the orginal Cast that would be great . Just think the first movie was a big hit and if they do a sequel that movie will be a hit as well as the 1st one. I would love to see Hairspray 2 and finally the answers they left in the first movie would finally be solved.

  40. Grease 2 – oh man. That movie is so bad it hurts me to think about it. Sequels always seem like a good idea but they never seem to work out that well. I couldn’t name two sequels that were better than the original. I just hope this is about creating more greatness (which I’m sure it is for some) more than ‘let’s suck more money from people!’ Gah.

  41. I think that they should make a sequal.if they have john the guy who started it all im in.i loved the younger cast in the film.like nikki zac amanda elijah.and if they brought the older cast again it would be perfect im in to watch it if its a good story and if the cast is in it.

  42. hairspray 1, no need to make it except for money. hairspray 2, no need whatsoever. if anyone thinks it will be the same or be as poignant you have another thing coming. this will be popcorn cinema all the way…

  43. I’m going to be neutral on this one. I enjoyed Hairspray, and it’s got some great songs on it too. The fact that the guy who did the whole thing from the start is a Plus. But you can never truly expect it to top the first one until it’s fully in front of us and you watch it. And even then it’s ever truly going to be an opinion.

  44. My point there Darren was that they didnt need to have the entire original cast.

I am sure if they go with a whole new story instead of a continuation, we might see some Hairspray people like in Grease 2, but the core stars that made the original may not be there.

  45. “But then who says that Hairspray 2 would even HAVE any of the original cast. Remember Grease 2?”

Apparently, Rodney, you didn’t: Didi Conn did reprise her supporting role of Frenchy in Grease 2, Sid Caesar as Coach Calhoun , and there were a few other supporting actors from the ’78 film that also appeared in the lame sequel, which does have some small cult following.

But that’s alright if you didn’t remember. You may be one of the lucky people…
