  1. I would also like to add, as a Movie Blog reader, listening to Doug review shitty movies is always entertaining. I always harbored a suspicion that John would send Doug to shitty movies on purpose because Nagy rants are worth their weight in gold.

In regards to the Hero of Rome, I thought they were going to do the story of Horatius Cocles who held a bridge against an invading army by himself (think a Roman version of Thermapolyae but with only one guy and he WINS). Instead it looks like they did it with Mucius Scævola who was as much a bad ass. But I won’t tell the story here I will wait to watch the movie and not spoil it for everyone.

It looks like a Swede has been reeled in. I hope Joel that you suggest some great Viking blood-letting movies. I agree that having buxom women around makes up for the fact that it is bright out the entire fucking day during the summer. I prefer the six months of darkness myself. Trevligt att träffas. Jag kan inte tala svenska så bra men jag fatta lite. Jeg bearbeta min Norska mer. Likväl välkommen!

  2. Welcome to the Macho Movie Review, Joel. I’m getting ahead of myself here, but I recommend next week’s selection, Hero of Rome, as a good place to start. It is public domain, and that way you can watch it before listening to the podcast while enjoying a totally kick-ass movie to boot.

We will not reach Goliath and the Dragon for another nine weeks or so. It looks killer.

It is ok if you abandon the Macho Movie Review for the summer. Exposed cleavage is always an acceptable excuse.

  3. For some reason I’ve just scrolled past the MMR until now. This weekend I listened to all the episodes, and you guys are winning me over.

I have yet to watch any of the movies that you review, but I’ve downloaded a couple of the public domain ones and I will watch them as soon as i get a chance.

Granted it might take a while since I’d have to take my eyes of all the blond teenagers that are everywhere showing of their clevages. Sweden in the summertime is heaven and hell at the same time.

BTW: How far of is Goliath and the Dragon?

Anyway… Keep up the good work!

  4. Adding to what Nagy already said, Hazmat, wading through this set has already allowed us to find a few truly great movies, with even more to come. I know I started on this journey thinking that it would just be an interesting experiment to even attempt to watch an entire 50-movie set, but as we make our way through them I realize I’m going to regret reaching the end. Also, there is very little discussion about these movies found on the internet, and it’s exciting to explore little-seen movies and fill that gap. Lastly, for the person who has the set, is thinking about purchasing it, or found movies from the set by other means, we’re hoping we can provide some help for them to differentiate the good from the bad.

Before we began the Macho Movie Review, Nagy and I had discussed the idea of writing a book devoted to Sword and Sorcery movies. I’ve compiled a list of about 50 movies in the genre, and I own 40 of them. We hadn’t intended on covering sword and sandal movies (or sword and planet, post-apocalyptic, historical, etc.) because we felt it would be a bit much to tackle. Since we’re going to finish up at least 50 sword and sandal movies, we may have to revise our original plan.

Just tonight Nagy expressed an interest in watching even more sword and sandal movies after we were done the set, and I revealed that I have at least a dozen more on top of the 50 we’re already watching.

Thanks for the historical background, BRDanzig. We really have no clue when it comes to the reality behind some of these stories, and it’s interesting to see how they deviate from the truth. Please continue to give us your knowledge whenever possible.

And thanks for the questions. We like to keep the podcasts short, so we’re sticking to one question per show, with a break to talk about Thor during Thor and the Amazon Women. You may like the first question best, but I think we’re all dying to discuss the third.

  5. Fortunately I got my BA in History and can help with the history of this movie. First off, it was way off base. They stated the king was Tullus Hostilius if I am right. He was the third and one of the worst kings of Rome. He would terrorize and start wars on a whim and generally treated everyone like shit. The end of the movie made me laugh to no end. There was no deferment to Roman will and this caused another war which ended with Alba being burnt, its citizens enslaved, and King Mettius being split into two by chariots. The contest did happen according to legend so at least that part was accurate but little else. In fact the Sabines were attacked after the Albans. Also Tullus Hostilius had little respect for the gods and according to legend was struck down by lightening because Jupiter felt insulted. The next movie looks like it will deal with the expulsion of Tarquinias Superbus who was as bad, if not worse. His reign caused the end of Roman monarchy and Rome swearing to never have another king and started the Republic.

History aside I thought this movie was bad but not Cleopatra’s Daughter bad. I hated the fucking hero to no end. He was a whiny bitch who ran away all the time. At least Ali Baba had his woman with him a couple of times when he ran away so it made more sense. But not this cocksucker. Like you guys I enjoyed the battle at the beginning and the Wolf pit scene. The Rape Boat had me shaking my head in disbelief. I really wondered what was with some of the people who make these movies. It’s like watching old American movies and seeing how African Americans were depicted. It was like they didn’t even know how degrading they were being. Still though I am sick and demented and could only laugh at the scene with the Alban and the sister. I will give this a 2 out of 9 hydra heads.

Thanks for taking the question. I sent several so you would have a selection to pick from and don’t expect you to get to all of them. Still though the question ya’ll did was the one I was hoping you would do. You did pronounce it right. It is B-R-Danzig. I took Br from my first name Brian and Danzig was the group that solidified my conversion to dark and evil heavy metal. I am officially stoked for the rest of the week!

  6. Because it’s fun to dig through the series and find gems along with the duds. It is also interesting to watch a number of films within the same genre, you learn what works, what doesn’t and you start to recognize the good from the bad.

The main reason is that the sword and sandal genre is among my most beloved, and this is a way for other fans of the genre to come together and chat with us.

  7. dude- doug..seriously..
