12 Films Matthew McConaughey Isn’t Surfer Slacker

In the same notion of John’s Harrison Ford Movies to watch where he is not Indy or Han, I tripped over a article at EW.com that says there are movies where Matthew McConaughey is not just a half naked surfer slacker destined for RomComs.

Enertainment Weekly lists:

DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993)
BOYS ON THE SIDE (1995)
LONE STAR (1996)
A TIME TO KILL (1996)
AMISTAD (1997)
EDTV (1999)
U-571 (2000)
THE WEDDING PLANNER (2001)
FRAILTY (2002)
REIGN OF FIRE (2002)
SAHARA (2005)
WE ARE MARSHALL (2006)

Back when the rumour was flying about McConaughey being considered for Captain America, everyone barked that he was a poor actor and only could do one role. I think the list above proves he is capable. I think he would be great in it if he can drop the Texas drawl.

Are there any other McConaughey performances that break that stereotype his RomCom appearances have stuck him in?

  1. Gosling might look it in the face (debatable) but the guy is a slender build. He doesnt carry the mass that clearly the fans want.

DiCaprio is a better actor than Gosling (nothing against the goose) but the reaction to his consideration is “he is too small” Gosling packed on some pounds for a role and just looks chubby. Otherwise he is a svelt fit rail that is very much like DiCaprio’s build.

  2. Paul Walker? Dude, I hope you’re joking. He’s probably the most charmless bore and worst actor ever. Why not cast Orlando Bloom as Cap while we’re at it?

If IRON MAN and INCREDIBLE HULK proofed something, it’s that you don’t need cute guys who happen to be stars at the moment, but real and talented actors in the lead. Robert Downey Jr, Edward Norton, Paul Walker? Tell me which one of those three doesn’t belong in that line.
Ryan Gosling looks the part and can fucking act. That’s what’s required here.

  3. frailty is one of those underrated gems…i loved that movie and was disappointed when no one knew what the hell i was talking about…

  4. First of all i respect Matthew McConaughey a lot specially after “A Time To Kill”. But aren’t we jumping ahead. Because “Thor” comes way before CA. Plus i still do feel that “Josh Holloway” aka James “Sawyer” Ford in “LOST” TV series is still a capable actor, who can pull any both of the roles. Even physically he can suit any of the roles. What do you guys think? Any comments.

  5. I liked Matthew McConaughey in Sahara, Contact, Dazed, Frailty, and a few others. He may not be the best actor, but he plays likable characters. Maybe it’s because where both Austin, Texas kids.

  6. FRAILTY! oh yea… forgot… that was an awesome surprise movie.
Its just that, he has turned himself into this stereotype, with his film choices, and personal life.

  7. He may not have been a surfer in Dazed and Confused, but he was most definitely a slacker. That being said, I think it’s his finest work, makes me laugh every time I see it.

Also, he definitely did not play a Surfer/Slacker in Contact.

  8. You can’t get Chris Evans. Remember Fantastic Four? He’s the human torch, and this is still a Marvel universe movie. If they plan a Hulk-esque reboot of the F4, then by all means, but until then…

  9. Yeah, well he may not be playing Surfer/Slacker-dude in THE WEDDING PLANNER, but nevertheless is that contrived piece of shit one of the worst rom-coms in recent history. And SAHARA sucked big time, too.
When was his last GOOD film by the way? FRAILTY is good and he’s good in it, but that was 6 years ago and in that time he seems to become totally self-obsessed and narcissistic.

I don’t care how big John and Doug’s man-crush on McConaughey is, I simply don’t want him as Cap. He doesn’t bring the charisma that I look for in Steve Rogers and he’s too big a name anyway. You don’t need a star for Captain America.
Once again: Get Chris Evans or Ryan Gosling.
