IronMan Breaks $100million Opening

As predicted, IronMan appears to have broken the $100million mark on its North American opening weekend.

Wired says:

The Marvel Comics adaptation, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the guy in the metal suit, hauled in $100.7 million during its opening weekend and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, the second-best premiere ever for a nonsequel, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The film also scored overseas with $96.7 million in 57 countries where it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million.

Surpassing their benchmark hopes of a modest $70million, Marvel films is likely already running to the bank and getting deals lined up for the sequel and likely building a lot of confidence behind their next tentpole franchise to bring to the screen.

I agree with Doug. It should be Thor. (That also ties into the Avengers Initiative Fury spoke of in the added clip in IronMan)

Did this number match your estimates?

  1. Coming from someone who didn’t even know an Iron Man existed…
    and
from someone who has only heard of Downey Jr. from a rumor of some crime or fall from grace of some sort………..

I love love loved this movie.
I agree with John in that it could have maybe one to two more action sequences, but that is it.

I loved everything about this movie. Absolutely everything.
Honestly, I went in with so so expectations, no knowledge, and not that much excitement, but I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a movie this much in a while.

And the audience I watched with agreed, people were clapping vigorously as the credits began to roll.

All I can say is GO IRON MAN GO!!!

  2. As someone who doesn’t read comics or particularly care for them, I knew who Iron Man was.

Well, actually, let’s put it this way…I knew OF him and I knew he was part of Marvel. As far as details, I knew nothing about him.

I would say most people have heard of Iron Man before this movie, but they’re probably unfamiliar with him as a whole.

  3. @Hisdivineshadow

“GTA is a gang oriented video game that glorifies killing people for street cred.”

I am not a big GTA fan but GTA is far far far more then that. The New GTA I bought this weekend got an average critic score of 99.1 (making it the most acclaimed video game ever)

Also the cutscenes in it are as good as most films I watch nowdays, The gap is merging. I Love my films but GTA is holding more then any film I have seen this past year (roll on hellboy 2, and Dark knight)

GTA is far from done my friend its just begining. It sold 604000 copies in the UK in the first weekend now unlike films this game will continue selling for a long time for 60USD.

  4. @Joshua
the Ultimate Nick Fury is based on Sam Jackson. who else were they gonna get to play it?. A lot of the Marvel flicks such as Iron Man (The Armor),Incredible Hulk (The Copter Jump) & so much of the Spider-Man films were based on the more believable Ultimate Universe.

  5. @Darren

I’m sure to Marvel that he’s not a second tier character (they’ve been trying to make this film for years), i just meant in terms of public recognition. A year before the movie, how many random people could tell you who Iron Man is?

Congrats on your prediction though. A ‘Movie Moan’ T-Shirt is on the way:)

  6. Please, oh god PLEASE don’t let Samuel L be Nick Fury!! Damn you hollyweird, damn you all to hell!!! 126 minutes of just pure movie magic cut down but a 5sec atrocity, if anything this was the only bad part for me. I wish I wouldn’t have waited to see that after the credits rolled.
It was like was like going home with Jessica Alba only to have her pull out a big weiner at the end of the night =)

  7. Yes, for me and my predictions, it’s pretty much the ballpark. In fact, a few weeks ago I actually said this to Phil Gee and Film Nerd Jamie:

“I think Iron Man could match up to (the first) Spider-Man film numbers domestically. It might even do better”

It didn’t, but I was off by a few million give or take.

    Speaking of Phil:

“Tell me if i’m wrong but is Iron Man that well known? I know i’ve never read one of his comics in my life.

Iron Man has *never* been a second-tier character for Marvel. In addition, he is one of the characters who could keep up with the times. The character even had a hand in inspiring RoboCop.

Now let’s say, for the sake of arguement, that not many people knew who Iron Man was. People (meaning general public at large) know who Spider-Man is; they know The Hulk. Fair enough.

    Who knew Blade?

See, it’s like this: this movie accomplished what should be accomplished in a film based on a superhero comic book. Simply, making a well done, polished movie. Folks know who Iron Man is now, that’s a given. For the comics, it will increase readership, it will bring in new fans and reclaim the old fans.

Because Iron Man was a character who adapted with the times well, it isn’t a surprise that the film turned out to be a well done adaptation.
Likewise, it’s easier to look bad ass in a suit of armor than it can in, well, Stars and Stripes spandex with an A on the head.

  8. Again Jamie, you appear to be in the minority regarding your opinion of IronMan. And considering the popularity of the GTA games, you again fall outside the norm. The game is incredibly popular and all the game sites are ranking it rather high.

  9. transformers will demolish ironman anyday of the week.

ironman was just…good (i cant even stress the word “just” enough)
but transformers was awsome TO ME. ironman was a film that talked about the begining or tony stark which is how it should have been done and it was boring in some parts and thats inevitable in an origin film unless you talk about the upcoming wolverene film which looks like will have lots of action

oh and btw- GTA sucks it stands for everything i hate…just like rap

  10. GTA done? okay, i quess mario kart is done to because that game sold horribly when compared to GTA, but hey if nintendo wants to compete with the big boys and open on the same week go for it!

    gamepsot: mario kart = 8.5, GTA = 10!!!!!!!!!!!!10!!!!!!!!!!!!10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!10!!!!!!!

i think mario kart is done!

  11. Iron Man had a great script, great action, VFX and a “very positive” character.
It was a very patriotic film.

    Transformers was a big mess.
Crap script (to be kind) and lame acting.
    ^
(And then theres the huge who give a shit factor with GTA)
GTA is a gang oriented video game that glorifies killing people for street cred.
    Can anyone tell me how
    much that made last week.
I bet its less than 40 mil.
    Somebody predicted 400 mil. Hahaha.
Yeah right smoke some more crack… From a lot of video gamers I talk too, GTA is done.

  12. No, it was nonsense to think that, with the exception maybe of a select few, people who bought the new GTA would not come out of their rooms until it was finished. Only a Harry Potter book has that power.

This is an incredible opening for what i thought was a second tier character. Tell me if i’m wrong but is Iron Man that well known? I know i’ve never read one of his comics in my life. I’m just amazed that it made more money than Transformers. It deserved every penny of course.

  13. I must say, I didn’t think GTA would kill this movie, but I wasn’t expecting 100 million, either. I was thinking 70-80, but hey, good for Downey. Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving actor.

  14. IronMan had a better everything.

Transformers was cool and a big hit, but frankly it didnt have as much positive buzz as this did going into its opening weekend. IronMan had everything going for it.

Also, I am finding very few people who disliked IronMan while the movie fanbase was somewhat polarized over Transformers.

  15. This film is less of a “blockbuster” than transformers and so i feel a little saddened that more people went to see this in its openeing weekend than Transformers. Surely Transformers had a bigger fan base due to the cartoon series? Maybe Iron Man had a better trailer??

  16. Iron Man= New Spider Man

Strange how iron man has NEVER been marvels leading franchise, but it definetly looks like it is now! They just need to improve the fight scenes so they match the caliber of spider-man 2 battles between doc oc and SM.

other than that everything else was top notch! story, characters, relations etc…..

Im suprised it made so much money so fast! i guess word of a good movie travels really fast these days! or the lack of good movies in general….

  17. My dad wants to see this movie all of the sudden. Which is so random, because he knows almost NOTHING about popular modern movies. That and he’s also expressed an interest now – twice – about Kill Bill.

I was considering going to the cheap show to watch this and I may. I’m glad it made 100 million, if it’s a good movie then it definitely deserves it.

  18. Wait, I thought the release of GTA IV was going to hurt Iron Man? I mean Halo 3 killed The Heartbreak Kid, right?

Good show Marvel, you make a great product which gets great reviews and you will make money.
