I know due to gas prices, I'm not driving ANYWHERE while I'm in school for summer classes. The bus is free for college students, so I've been catching that thing to the mall. The movie theater is literally right across the street, so that ain't a problem.

You get a sense of why Speed Racer didn't do well when you read more than one review calling it cartoonish.
And the Nascar fans saying it dosnt conform to race standards. (No shit).

Out of touch reviews and a strong Iron Man audience is why Speed failed.
The film (IMO) was ahead of its time, like the Wachowskis themselves.

Speed Racer was brillaint.

They made a huge mistake with Prince Caspian. It should have been released in November or December last year. Then it's only real competition would have been Golden Compass.
The second mistake is because they decided to release it in May they had to avoid competition form Iron Man and Indy internationally, which means it won't be releaed in any most European countries until late June at the earliest.. The first one made $450 million internationally, i predict this will make a lot less because of the late release-date

$150 million at the least Kristina. Adding in P+A this thing will have cost over $200. It is doing well overseas so tanking might be a little harsh but Disney will be wondering what's gone wrong here. They should have opened at xmas like the first one. It just doesn't have a "summer" movie vibe if ya know what I mean.

I told my wife that I watched Speed Racer as a cartoon when I was a child. Now that I'm in my late thirties I don't want to see this at all. If you have a 6 year old - tell me that these "special effects" are the same effects that they used in the Spy Kids movies? Because they are. Even Pixar's cars looked better than this.

Iron Man is still kicking ass and taking numbers considering the competition. It has pretty much become profitable in Domestic take alone. Check out the World Wide take over at boxofficemojo.com. Close on 500 Million already. It is now the 4th top domestic Marvel Film to date and 4th top Supderhero film to Date, beating out Batman and Men in black now (not including inflation based math). It might just beat out Spider-Man 3 in fact. Narnia is not doing nearly as well as hoped, but will hopefully reach profitability in theatres. Indy of course is doing great and will see profit in theatres. Hopefully these movies won't overshadow Hulk too much and take away too much of it's box office.

Any idea John or Doug about what Marvels' take is on their films. I know they are getting the lion share, but any numbers available for what paramount is getting for distribution and so-forth?

At the rate these films are going, Marvel will retain ownership of the characters without problem and pay back that 500 Million dollar loan in no time.

WB still has Batman and Harry Potter to fall back on before the end of the year. It sure stings to lose that much cash but don't worry too much about them.

And one thing i hope the Wachowskis (thanks for helping me spell that Doug) may learn from this is that it is important to actually get out there and talk about your new film if you want people to see it. It has always bothered me that the Wachowskis never do any press whatsoever. They are 'names' and people want to hear what they have to say. If they were making independant films with their own money then they could do what they want but if they take $120 mill of WB's money to make their vision of 'Speed Racer' then they should feel obligated to help publicise it as much as they can. I'm not saying 'Speed Racer' flopped because they didn't do any press for it, i'm just saying it helps.
