Star Wars TV By 2010

250Px-Ig-88We have news about the upcoming Star Wars TV show for you today thanks to our good friends over at MTV:

If you thought the cantina in Mos Eisley was a “wretched hive of scum and villainy,” well you’d better be cautious because an upcoming journey back to the “Star Wars” universe is going to reveal the “greasy, seamy underbelly of ‘Star Wars.’” That’s what Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm’s Director of Fan Relations, revealed to MTV News at New York’s Comic Con yesterday about the much anticipated live-action “Star Wars” TV show in development. Confirming that the show will “involve some characters we know” along with new creations, Sansweet said the show would be “of epic scale.”

As for how Lucas and company are going to approach such a massive undertaking he said “it will take advantage of everything George has learned about digital.” I guess that means it will at least look a little better than that that “Star Wars Holiday Special.” Sansweet said the initial writers of the show have been selected and “they’ve had their first couple sessions working with George and [producer] Rick [McCallum].” So when can we expect all of this? “We’ll see it in production probably sometime in 2009. Hopefully the series will be on by 2010,” said Sansweet.

I am all for a gritty, dirty filthy look at the Star Wars universe. I love Star Wars 4, 5 and 6 and watch them at least once every year. Lucas created a fantastic universe that is rife with possibilities and will serve as an excellent platform for an ongoing science fiction television show. With hope, the team of writers they have assembled are people of vision and talent. I look forward to going from world to world and also getting to know some cities, bars and locals very well.

There is a magic to Star Wars that was absent from the prequels, but with luck – will return to the television show. Star Trek was able to convert a TV show into a number of kick ass films; now we wait to see if Star Wars can take the wonder of the films and stretch it out into a television series.

As much as I bitch about the prequels – I still want this to rule. I want to see Bossk fight IG-88 for a bounty. I want to see more people fed to the sarlak pit, and gosh darn it, I want to see more fuckin’ jedi slashing shit to bits with light-sabers.

I expect big things from the Star Wars universe because it’s a vision that demands excellence.

Less than 2 years to go – giddy up!

  1. As much as most people like to bitch about the prequels… they did have their moments. They were highly flawed(then again, so was Return of the Jedi)… having Anakin be a child in TPM and a whiny EMO kid in AOTC were probably the two biggest. C’mon though, Revenge of the Sith was abso-fuckin-lutely fantastic(with the notable exception of Natalie Portman, who turned in one of the worst performances of her career)! It was just about everything I wanted out of a STAR WARS film. In fact, I’d probably go so far as to say that it’s my second favorite of the six… second only to Empire.

Having said all that, I am thrilled beyond belief to hear that the live action series will focus less on the shiny and more on the grimy. The lived in/almost falling apart quality from the original trilogy was one of the things I felt was missing from the prequels for the most part.

I can’t fucking wait for this series to hit the air!

  2. My thoughts mirror Monty. Interested and somewhat curious about this project but the prequels also took the wind out of me.

To this day I’m not sure what exactly happened in the prequels to make them so bad…it would be cool to see a documentary someday just to see the procees that was went thru to make the prequels. It might reveal some of what went down and clarify the choices Lucas made i.e. Jar Jar and the age of Annikin.( Who I always thought would be in his teens, 15 or 16). I would even like to know why Lucas directed the actors to be so stiff, aside from Ewan who did a wonderful job.

  3. I love that concept.
It is exactly what the grown-up fans of Star Wars want.
Screw the Jedis, I know Lightsabers are cool and all, but it’s time to ditch that perspective and look at this universe from another angle. Imagine a gritty show about a bounty hunter who hunts his targets through the dirty lower plattforms of Corouscant or in some dirty spice-mine on Kessel. That would fucking kick ass. Bring in some familiar faces like Bossk, IG-88 or Jabba, set it in OT-times and everyone will watch it.
This is where the future of this franchise is. Lucas “exploited” the childish side of it to a point where it can only become repetitive. That’s why I’m skeptical about the new animated series, it seems to feature stuff we’ve seen a few times already. The fans want a new direction and this is it.

  4. I’ll watch it when it airs, but I’m not waiting on pins and needles for it, the prequels took a lot of the wind out of the sails of this franchise for me.

  5. I watch all 6 at least six times a year there is a lot to take in from star wars. I think Star Wars is not over rated but over rated for the wrong reasons. I am really excited for this show and making in darker is evan better.
