Movie Blog Uncut – Feb 1st 2008

Hey there folks. Sorry for getting this installment of The Movie Blog Uncut up late, but as you’ll see in the video, we had a major audio problem that I just couldn’t fix. I have decided NOT to put up the audio only version of this episode and wasn’t going to put this one up at all… but decided to at least put up the video version. The audio problem (the mics failed to work and so all the audio is coming from the camera’s built in mic instead) won’t happen again I promise. So without further delay, here is the Friday, Feb 1st edition of Uncut.

  1. John,
are you wearing a Capt. Kirk uniform in that video?

That’s not really what I wanted to say though. As much as I’d love to trust the “official synopses” written by the marketing team that may or may not have seen the film before writing that definitive bit of film interpretation. Still it might be worth while to consider the opinion of the many noted film critics who are of the same opinion as your friend-o Doug.

Seriously, did you even bother to read my comment? Or is the “official synopses” the only word you need on the subject? You may as well have quoted from a user review at IMDB. You may as well base your argument on the DVD box art (nope, no sheriff Tom Bell on the cover, that settles it).

Kristina, you’re right of course, it depends on how you interpret the story. A good friend of mine thinks it’s Chugrah’s story and he makes a decent case.

But I think Doug made a good point (and I did too, in my post above) and I wish John thought about it a bit before dismissing it. And quoting the film’s website is just ridiculous. Next he’ll be pointing to the McDonalds happy meal tie-in.

  2. I can honestly say that this was my least favorite pod cast. I like hearing personal thought on things other than movies but when John and Doug start talking about the Democratic Debate for what felt like 5 to 10 mins it really made me want to stop watching. We hear about this stuff on the news all the time. With that said I loved the rest of the pod cast. Doug is funny and John is cool but because of that disscussion about the debate I really could care less.

  3. Hey Rusty,

Here’s the official synopsis of No Country For Old Men, taken right from the official movie site that talks about what the movie is about:

“The story begins when Llewelyn Moss (BROLIN) finds a pickup truck surrounded by a sentry of dead men. A load of heroin and two million dollars in cash are still in the back. When Moss takes the money, he sets off a chain reaction of catastrophic violence that not even the law – in the person of aging, disillusioned Sheriff Bell (JONES) – can contain. As Moss tries to evade his pursuers – in particular a mysterious mastermind who flips coins for human lives (BARDEM) – the film simultaneously strips down the American crime drama and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning’s headlines.”

Nope, the movie isn’t about the sherrif.

  4. Hey Gio, way off topic here but I’ve just now listened to the latest nowlive. Doug is absolutly correct about Tommy Lee in No Country bening the main character, or at the protagonist.
It’s counter intuitive because Jones doesn’t have the most screen time, and you’re correct in saying that he never influences the course of the story. But it’s a film that loves to throw convention to the wind so hear me out here. The movie is ultimatly about Jones’ character confronting his own mortality (with Javier representing the unrelenting and inescapable force of death) and realizing his obselensence. It’s his story arc, he is the character who changes, and the title refers to him. Also he has the first and last lines in the film.

  5. Hi John,

Wondering if this video will be available to download as well as the others have been as the only chance I get to listen to podcast is on mp3 player on my way to work.

If you were able to post the mp4 video file as you have done with the others I can at least extract the audio to mp3 file so I have an audio version to listen to!

    Thanks
