It looks like the Raimi brothers are going to kick it old school and bring their fans straight to the belly of the underworld! We get this bitchin’ news thanks to the voluptuous professionals at Variety:
After helming three “Spider-Man” films, Sam Raimi will return to his genre roots to direct “Drag Me to Hell,” a supernatural thriller he wrote with his brother, Ivan Raimi. The morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse will go into production early next year. It will be financed through Ghost House, a joint venture Raimi and Rob Tapert formed several years ago with Mandate Pictures.
“Sam calls it a ‘spook-a-blast,’ a wild ride with all the chills and spills that ‘Evil Dead’ delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film,” “The appeal to Sam on ‘Drag Me to Hell’ was returning to what he had once done and loved doing, which was entertaining a very specific group of fans and providing a roller coaster ride for them,” Tapert said. “He doesn’t have the enormous pressure here that goes with handling a hundreds of millions of dollars franchise.”
This is great stuff, I enjoy Sam Raimi’s work and it is cool to see him return to his roots. It sounds like he is doing it for the enjoyment of himself and his fans, and I think that is a recipe for a quality picture. Without a doubt, the lions share of our readers will have stimulated genitals thanks to this announcement.
As an atheist I am still able to enjoy a good tale that involves a hell-bound journey. Curses, damnation, lakes of fire and the goatlord himself always makes for quality story telling. From Little Nicky to Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey to Hellraiser different spins on hell always have a soft spot in my heart. This is probably directly related to my love for heavy metal, but I don’t want to speculate. (SEPULTURA RULES!)
With production starting early next year, this film should not be that far off. By this time next year I am hoping that we will be able to give Drag Me To Hell a review. This is certainly news that should be celebrated by all! … Now we hurry up ad wait.
