Gerard Butler as Sabretooth in Wolverine Movie?

I am a big XMen fan, and therefore by relation a fan of Wolverine. So when I found out there were doing a Wolverine movie I was pretty excited. Of course this had to be a prequel movie or at least go into Wolverine’s past so that meant SABRETOOTH!!

Chud.com has some casting rumours about Logan’s nemisis:

Karl Urban had been in talks to play Creed – the guy who would become Sabretooth – but has fallen out. The production is now reaching out to Gerard Butler to take on the role.

Of all the comic book movies out there it is no secret that XMen is my favourite franchise. Even the third one. It was the XMen books that got me hooked on comics. I started with Excalibur and on to the core XBooks and eventually became a big fan of the characters of XMen.

Though Wolverine was not my top favourite (Nightcrawler is) he did rank up pretty high on the appeal scale. I attempted to resist the fanboy instincts as he was often the favoured Xman of choice. So it was no surprise to me that they take the most story driven and mysterious character to do the first XMen Spinoff Movie.

The character of Creed (Sabretooth) is tightly wound into Wolverine’s past. I was somewhat disappointed in the first XMen movie where they reduced Sabretooth to a grunting mindless animal then completely forget he existed in subsequent sequels.

The role clearly has to be played by someone with some impressive phyisque, and at the time and with the extensive character developement they intended to go into, Tyler Mane was suitable. But in the Wolverine spinoff we are going to see a LOT more of Creed and therefore need to see an actor who can carry the character. Sorry, but a former pro wrestler of limited exposure is hardly worthy of such an indepth role. For this to work, I am certain he will have a speaking part.

Gerard Butler played a captivating and strong character in 300 and drove that story. I have no doubts that his charismatic and uber beefy presence are a perfect combination for Creed. This is the best casting rumour so far for Wolverine and I hope it carries a lot of weight.

  1. Actually Sabertooth is 6’6 and wolverine is 5’3, so he is over a foot taller than wolverine. 6’10 Tyler Mane was a good choice when their wasn’t many speaking roles but he isn’t really an actor.

  2. Oh my god! Butler and Jackman in same film as superheroes! What a fantastic pairing (of course I’m speaking from a biased, female perspective)

  3. If they make Scream 7 (when did it end?) and Butler’s in it, I’m still gonna watch it. Of course I am biased. By TEH SEXX emanating from.. where ever it is sex emanates on a human physique.

Wolverine in the comics is depicted differently according to the pencil artist however the official stats have Logan at a staggering 5’2″. There was quite a stink when a 6’2″ actor was cast as Wolverine.

Sabretooth, according to the Marvel website is listed as 6’6″

  5. According to IMDB Jackman 6’2″1/2, Butler 6’2″

I’ve always seem to me that Sabretooth was depicted being at least 4-5″ taller than Wolverine. I guess you could always add those inches to the sole of Sabretooth’s boots and a bit of camera angle manipulation.

I didn’t think Butler was very tall. I thought he was on the shorter side. If he is over 6 feet…than ya I guess he wouldn’t make a good Wolverine. BUt I still think he has the look and intensity needed. I guess Sabertooth is alright, but I always pictures Sabertooth as massive…bigger than even Butler.

  7. I must be the only person in existance that despised the second movie. I loved the first one and I really enjoyed the third one, but the second one…rubbed me the wrong way in a big way. I just can’t stand it.

  8. I am always a fan of keeping the same character in a role, especially for a spin off like this.

There was enough fuss about making Jackman Wolverine because if his height. If they made a hulking man over 6ft in the role of Wolverine it would have been even more poorly received.

Though I am sure Butler could do the acting bit, he just is too “big” physically to play Logan. Creed is a good fit.
