Russell Crowe As Star Trek Villain?

Crowe-TrekIf you’re going to do another Star Trek movie, then I’ve always said you’ve got to do it right… and that mean abandoning the old franchise and start over. They also have to take it seriously and be committed to putting the best film on screen that they possibly can. Well, they’ve already done the first thing right by ditching the old cast (who were wonderful… but the time had come to move on) and re-imagining the Star Trek Universe (with the exception of Leonard Nimoy who will cameo as an older Mr. Spock to creative some connection between the two universes). And now, if this rumor is true… it would mean they are VERY DEADLY serious about the new film.

Word is that Paramount is going after Russell Crowe to be the villain in the new Star Trek. Our friends over at Cinema Blend give us this:

they claim that it’s a priority for J.J. Abrams to land at least two big stars for the film. One of those could be a cameo (Tom Cruise as Captain Pike?), but the other they’re hoping will end up playing the villain. IGN has a name to go with that villain, and they say it could be none other than Russell Crowe.

This would be nothing short of absolute brilliance. One of my favorite sayings that I repeat a lot around here is “It’s never a bad idea to add talent”. Well buddy, you add the best actor alive today (no disrespect to any of the other greats out there, but no one comes close to how good Crowe is as a pure actor) as your villain (and I’ve always said the key to a great action/adventure movie is a solid villain), and you are well on your way to making this damn franchise respectable again.

Can you imagine how big of a coupe this would be if they could actually convince Crowe to take this? Genius. Brilliant. Amazing. There aren’t enough words for how good this would be for Star Trek. And seeing Crowe and a bad guy (which we’re getting ready to see him do in 3:10 to Yuma) would be a hell of a lot of fun. Let’s hope this turns out true.
