Shrek 5

John had a heavy heart coming out of Shrek 3. You’ve got to understand, I really enjoyed the first 2 Shrek films. I thought the second one (while not quite as good as the first over all) was one of the funniest films of the year when it came out. So you can imagine my guilty little enjoyment I got out of going to see Shrek 3… until the movie started… and I realized it was total crap.

However, quality has nothing to do with a studios decision to make another one or not (and who can blame them really when your crappy movie rakes in over $300 million domestically alone). So we all know a Shrek 4 is coming… but apparently Dreamworks has plans for a Shrek 5, and then call it quits. The folks over at JoBlo give us this:

Of course, they’re not throwing in the towel until after the fifth installment. We still have two more pop culture filled ogre adventures to come! Yay! According to DreamWorks spokesman Rich Sullivan, “The story itself has five chapters. Based on the success of the first three films, at the very least, the next one, ‘Shrek 4,’ is warranted.”

Ok, first of all that is total bullshit that “The story has 5 chapters”. As if this has all been one big plan. But putting that aside, the grim reality that another 2 Shrek films are on the way leaves me to either despair or find hope. At this point (at least for now) I’ll chose to hope. Hope that somehow they can get this franchise back on track and give us something entertaining again. Something funny again. Something worth watching again… because I swear to you, I laught a grand total of ONE time in Shrek 3. ONCE… near the end with the whole “the only person you have to blame is you”… that was funny. I paid $12 for ONE laugh. It’s like going to a Doug Nagy comedy show (ZING! Kidding Doug).
