It is time to dawn robes of camel hair and start a diet of locusts! We are going back to the Bible for the old school living brought to us by literal interpretations of scripture! We get news of this project from the caves of Yahoo:
Paramount Pictures and Plan B Entertainment are putting their faith in Julian Farino. The helmer is attached to direct “The Year of Living Biblically” for the studio.
Jay Reiss is adapting the screenplay from A.J. Jacobs’ nonfiction book “The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Obey the Bible as Literally as Possible.” The author immersed himself in the rules of both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The book is scheduled to be published in October by Simon & Schuster.
I still have to pick up this book. When I first heard about this novel I thought 2 things: 1) What a great idea for a book. 2) Poor Bastard. You see living according to a literal interpretation of the scripture (both Old and New Testament) is crazy tough to do. You will find it hard to locate a Christian that follows the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament alone, never mind the books of rules from the Old Testament.
I think this is a great experiment to show us how restrictive religious life can be. Religions have different sets of rules as to distinguish themselves from each other and from society. In Christianity in particular, a war within or against “the flesh” is always at the forefront of daily Christian suffering. The apostle Paul talks about this at great length in his epistles about how one can best conquer their human desires and wants, in order to live a life of sacrifice to the Christian god.
As someone that went to school to be a minister, and is now an atheist; I can appreciate this movie from many angles and am excited to see it. If done well it should bring to light the difficulties of being devout.
