Here is the most unsurprising news of the day. It appears that Transformers, Fantastic Four, and TMNT will all be getting follow up films. Surprised? Didn’t think so. We get the expected announcements today from our friends at moviehole:
Firstly, there’s already buzz – and I’m not surprised – that Dreamworks and Twentieth Century Fox, respectively, has greenlit sequels to their tent-poler’s “Transformers” and “Fantastic Four : Rise of the Silver Surfer”.
And according to ‘Jeremy’, Michael Bay’s website is abuzz with talk of a “Transformers 2”. That’s pretty much a no-brainer though, right? (Here in Australia, “Transformers” was the second biggest opening day of 2007, behind “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and the fifth biggest ever non-sequel opening ever). I’m aware the producers are keen to get moving on film number two… it’s just up to Dreamworks to fire the starter pistol.Meantime, Marvel’s Steve Murphy tells readers on his blog that another “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie is likely.
I am certainly looking forward to another Transformers movie. I had problems with the story and with some of the human characters, but when the robots were on the screen; it was magic. If Mr. Bay is reading this – metal characters > flesh characters. Oh, and leave that annoying robot in the scrapheap….and while your at it, throw in Devastator and some Dinobots.
The Fantastic Four franchise should just draw a hot bath and slit its wrists. It needs a restart like the Hulk and if life was fair we would not see another film from these characters for about 6-10 years.
As for TMNT, I still have to see the film. I have heard it was decent but until I get a chance to see it, I cannot give proper thought about my anticipation of a sequel.
All in all, no surprises here, we expect sequels from films especially comic book films/cartoon remakes. With movies like the Transformers, the film was pretty much made to be franchised and as long as the quality keeps getting better (which is certainly possible here) I will be in line waiting to see the next installment.
