It looks like Jim Carrey is going to show us the hilarious side of falling off the wagon in his upcoming film Sober. We get the following synopsis from the news masters at Variety:
Universal Pictures has set Jim Carrey to star in “Sober Buddies,” a comedy Carrey will produce with Stuber/Parent’s Scott Stuber and Mary Parent and Michael Peyser.
Andrew Kurtzman is writing the script, about a hard-partying software exec assigned a court-appointed Sober Buddy to keep him under control during a critical business trip to Las Vegas. A perfect plan falls apart when the Sober Buddy (Carrey) falls off the wagon.
Jim has had huge success with his comedic films when it comes to box office earnings, but I do not feel that there has been a role yet, that has fully utilized his comedic talent. Jim is a very funny man and yet my favorite films that he has been in, have been dramas. Man On The Moon and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind were great films and are highly rewatchable for me. I am waiting for his comedy swan song. I do not think we have seen it yet, and when we do, I think it will be legendary.
This project does have potential to be damn hilarious. In this role Carrey can have a Jeckyl and Hyde duality about him, he can be the straight man for the first half of the film and then switch gears causing the other fellow to assume the position of the “designated driver.” I would love to see Carrey babysit someone like Rip Torn, to me that would be a pairing of legend. We will have to wait and see what other information comes down the pipe regarding this film, but for now I must admit that it is a funny premise, and I think this may have some beefy legs.
