Groundhog Day tops the list of so many movie fans favourite comedies. Its certainly near the top of mine. So when I heard the news of Disney buying the rights to a remake I was reminiscent of the classic Bill Murray movie, but nervous about the word remake. The good news is its not a remake. Not really.
But it’s been fourteen years since the original came out — don’t you think it’s time for a remake? No? Well good, because they’re not making one. However, they are taking the same exact concept and setting it in a high school — an attempt, I imagine, to convince a younger generation that this is a hip, fresh idea. Based on a pitch from first-time feature scribe Flint Wainess, Monday Monday has been picked up by Disney with Adam Shankman (Hairspray) and Jennifer Gibgot attached to produce through their Offspring Entertainment.
God this is such a BAD idea. The movie was perfect. It was never answered WHY this was happening to poor Bill or even Puxutawney Phil, and you didn’t need to know. This is one of those genius movies that needs to be left alone and just re-released in an anniversary edition on February Second.
Instead Groundhog Day Junior, despite not having a script or cast, is set to screen sometime next year.
