LA Weekly is a tabloid mag so I am having a hard time believing all of this. Major parts of the movie was filmed is 05 along with dead mans chest to reduce cost. Additionally once filming resumed in 06 they only filmed for 70 days without a hitch. I also have a problem with unnamed sources. Is that what journalism has come to? I have no doubt the special effects are eating away at the budget though. The FX companies are gouging the studios big time, but 300+ million take with a grain of salt.

Agreed, it's not the insane budget that's worrisome (they do have all that money just laying around from Pirates 2), its that they aren't finished yet. Talk about cutting it close. That does explain why we're a month away from release and only have one trailer and very little promotion. Unless they get off their asses and start promoting this thing with some interesting clips, I don't have a lot of excitement for it.

I was very disappointed in Pirates 2, so I may completely wait for DVD on this one, unless I read some fantastic reviews, or like John said, we get Captain Jack back from the first one.

why should i care if the budget is $300 million?

Since i only go to matinees, i'll still be paying 6.50 for my ticket despite their budget being $300 million. It only means that i'm getting more bang for my buck. And since you're the special effects guy, that means they could spend more for the fx which you are so infatuated with.

Hey Alfie,

Why dont you use some of that crazy math of yours and tell me how much money it would have to make in order to break even. :P

just messin' with ya, dude.

And who cares how much money it cost to make?
POTC:2 has made over a billion dollars... theatrically, not counting DVD's. Trust me, the studio has made it's money back, and then some. The money this movie makes is just gravy on the top.

The three hour thing has me a little worried though.
Like Kristina, my butt was completely numb after sitting through part 2. I hope this one is better than that one.

CGI doesn't come cheap, that's certain. Sorry to disagree too, but I like longer movies - as long as it's to benefit the storyline. Lord of The Rings was incredibly long, but the story was really deep so we all looked the other way when ROTK weighed in at over 3 hours. But there's no way you can say this is a story they can't tell in 2.

@Jaysmack

You thought Pirates 1 was too long? Pirates 2 by far felt twice as long as the first one. Sweet Jesus, my ass was beyond numb when #2 finally ended.

WOW!!!! That is is one huge fucking BUDGET!!! I never thought that this franchise would ever have a budget that big I mean not even James Cameron new movie Avatar has a budget that big I think its just under $200 Million and that is from the man who was the first to make a $100 and $200 Million movies. I think they are going to lose a lot of money domestically because Spider-Man made about $400 million the first but it didn't get back to mark in the sequel which did come close but didn't reach the mark.

I suppose if there is one studio that can afford to give a single film $300 Million budget it certainly would be Disney. Did all of the Lord of the Rings movies cost that much to make?
