i just don’t get why this is sooo surprising anyway…

a three hour tribute to exploitation films…with missing reels…….fake trailers….it was a weird concept …i know people who couldn’t get their heads around it entirely….it just sounded weird to them.,…..

i mean i did think it would do a little better but i certainly never thought it would be in the 30-40 million range….i know the weinsteins were hoping for a 20 mill plus opening but seriously this was hardly mainstream fare….

Speaking of, he’s worked with Jessica Alba, Salma Hayek, even Carla Gugino in Sin City was a piece of ass, and he picks Rose McGowan to bone? She’s hot in Planet Terror for sure, but not hotter than those three. If you’re gonna ditch your wife of 16 years and mother of your million kids, at least ditch her for a smokin’ piece of ass!

I’m 20. I had never heard of a grindhouse before I saw the trailer. I was only distantly familiar with the movies they were homaging when the explanation was going on, but got the idea immediately. The trailer did a great job (the one I saw) of explaining what exactly a grindhouse was. Then I saw the scenes showcased in the trailer and it caught my interest immediately.

I really don’t know how anyone my age COULDN’T be interested in seeing this, especially since it’s an action/horror RR/QT film and the trailer kicking ass. The only research I did before seeing this movie was seeing the trailer…that did it for me.

Be honest people, most of you had no clue what a grindhouse movie was before hearing about the tribute. If you are under 40, most grindhouse theaters and drive-ins were dead and replaced by multiplexes by the time you were old enough to have gone and your “grindhouse” experience was direct to video Full Moon movies. QT and RR are trying to recreate an experience that the majority of the movie going audience don’t have any clue about. And if they do, they are the 40-55 age group that don’t go to the movies except for with their kids.

So Grindhouse needed great word of mouth and the strength of its directors to get people in the theater, which hasn’t happened yet.

too bad. even though death proof was not a fantastic movie, you definitly get your money worth going to this. it is very different from your average movie going experience.

i am not particualarily suprised though…i was one of the few people i know that was excited to see it.

but then again, i am a big horror fan.

Okay, it sucks that the film flopped. Now I have to wait for the DVD because I now have to wait for Spider-Man 3 and Pirates 3!

Lets say this film crawls to 40- 50 million it still would be in line with the grosses these filmmakers have seen. Kill Bill only grosses 70 million and other than Spy Kids Rodriguez has done nothing at the box office. Once people have a certain perspective they will understand that there the opening day gross was no shocker. The Weinsteins are getting desperate, so they over hyped this movie thinking it might be a hit. This movie grossed exactly what is was suppose to.

The problem is this film went over budget to the tune of 65 million. Most of which was RR’s fault. Word is he was f-ing Rose McGowan ad the film got delayed. People should remember that this was to be released around the Halloween period of 06. The move has already fail(baring a miracle) to reach profitability theatrically after this weekend. It was a bad idea to release it over the weekend of Easter.

Most director borrow and are influenced by other films. You make it sounds as if he copies things word for word. I don’t think his small fanbase is sick of him they will always be there. The problem s that this was marketed as somewhat of a small blockbuster. That was a big mistake and thus it is view as a disappointment.

^Couldn’t’ve said it any better, Chris. It’s like the internet hype machine AGAIN went out of control on this film. Honestly, I NEVER bought into this film in any way shape or form, and if you asked me how much I thought it would make opening weekend, not to brag but I probably would have said $10 million.

It’s no Kill Bill–why couldn’t some of the overexcited internet fanboys see that?? Haven’t you learned anything from Snakes on a Plane? What’s good for an internet JOKE-slash-“OMGCoolThingHaveYouHeardOrSeenItOMG!” does NOT make for something that puts asses in the seats!
