The superman returns movie wasn't that bad but I think Bryan singer should not have used kryptonite in the movie since it was already used in the first movie, besides using it is so boring!!!!!! why not come up creative ways for villains to kill superman, any upcoming sequels kryptonite should
never be used or it will kill the franchise for sure.

Superman Returns, despite overly replicating 'Superman: The Movie', created a firm platform for a great sequel, hence reintroducing the character to good effect.

Essentially though, the sequel must contain major action / peril - yet in close symmetry - still managing to demonstrate and maintain a good storyline and a steady development of characters.

In terms of potential villains, it would be nice to see more than one in the plot. Infact a trio of scum would be ultimate competition for supes. As personal preference, a combination of Brainiac and General Zod - and Luthor acting as some kind of a catalyst by manipulating their presence and further provoking them to all bounds of evil would be flawless!

This, coupled with a buoyant pin-point film marketing campaign, would surely deliver a swashbuckling, SUPER affair !

Yeah... more....

That's what I want.
Another Superman movie where he just continues to lift increasingly heavier objects, and creepily spy on old girlfriends.

Yay...

Here's what should happen:

-- Due to a mistake / conflict of priorities etc, Superman ends up killing Lois

-- This sets up the motivation for a dust off between Supey and HIS SON

+ points:
#1 No more Kate Bosworth
#2 A decent powers vs powers fight
#3 The kid gets it in the end (obviously)

You know what, as much as I loved Superman Returns, it really wouldnt bother me if Singer didnt come back.

I do believe Singer is capable of making a sequel that will please the fans, however its a foregone conclusion that The Man of Steel is going to be a much different film than Returns. I think that was going to be the case no matter how Returns was received.

So to bring in someone else whose niche would be a more action oriented epic style hero movie would be fine. But that description I just gave also fits Singer, so...whatever they do Im fine with, as long as they are committed to telling a good story and not just making a mindless slugfest movie with no soul.

The "Failed Clone of Superman" is exactly what Superman4 was. Nuclear Man? He was cloned from a DNA sample found in superman's hair strand that Lex stole. Yeah, you read that right. (Also in the current comics the late Superboy - Kon El - was a genetic cross breed of Superman and Luthor - please no more clones)

Now go watch Superman4 and weep.

They hit on a sort of Bizzarro (a bad Superman) in S3 where the red Kryptonite made Supes go bad, and he split into Kent and Superman and fought himself.

All these ideas have been done.

Brainiac or Darkseid would be fine with me. But I think Metallo would be another good choice (though I could understand if some people thinks he might resemble the Terminator a bit). And I think Bizarro would make a good adversary too, especially if Singer and Co. used John Byrne's story, where he was Lex Luthor's failed clone of Superman.
