Prince of Peace – God of War Update

So here’s the skinny. As a lot of you know, my very first attempt at a documentary “Prince of Peace – God of War” is way over due. My trailer (which you can see here) says “October 2006” on it. Well we’re more than 5 months past due and I’m no closer to finishing than I was back in August.

The main problem is that I thought I could edit this thing on my own. I’m actually a pretty good editor, but I’ve never really done a feature style documentary before and it’s a TOTALLY different thing than editing a scripted film or short film. And no matter how much I’ve tried over the past 6 months to edit this thing… it always ends up sucking. I need help, and I’ve finally admitted that to myself. This movie needs to get finished. It’s too important (to me anyway) not to. To do that, I need a pro.

So a couple of days ago I started looking for an editor to work with me to finish this thing. I’ve talked to a couple here in Canada and a few down in Los Angeles. My money is super tight so it’s tough to find a good one with lots of experience and a pro editing bay to do it… but there have been a number of LA guys who love the trailer and are interested in getting their names on my movie, so they’re willing to work on it for less than their normal fees.

I should made a decision this week, and hopefully… by the end of May, I’ll finally have “Prince of Peace – God of War” ready to be viewed by the world. If it’s worth watching that is.

  1. Hey John.

Thanks for updating about this. I hope you got my message asking about the progress. As everyone else on here is expressing, I also want you to know we’re all interested in watching this doc, and we know that with the attention to detail you have in other people’s movies, you’ll do your own project justice.

    Cheers

  2. I hope you’ll make it accessible to those of us who can’t see it in North America.

I’m really interested in what you talk about… plus you interviewed campolo.

  3. Trailer looked good – first time I watched it. Although I feel the need to say that “congregations” is spelled incorrectly in the NY Times quote. I’m sure you have that fixed by now, though.

  4. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to make a cohesive film with lots of footage without knowing at the time of shooting exactly how it will fit in the whole scheme of things.
I’ve always been impressed with watching a good doc because afterwards, I always wonder how they decided to edit it together to make it what it is.
You’re right when you say it’s different from editing a scripted film.
    Good Luck John.

  5. I for one think the trailer looks fantastic, and the topic is very relevant to our culture today. This looks like an important project John.

Kudos to you for being willing to admit to yourself that you can’t do everything. Lots of people are too proud to do that. Best of luck finding the right person to work with you on this. I can’t wat to see it!

  6. Best of luck, John (Gio). You can’t expect your first attempt to blow the socks off everyone and garner you awards and recognition and Oscars. You may only get a lukewarm response, but a lukewarm response is much, much, much better than a BAD response, and that’s something to be proud of, don’t forget that.

    Keep us updated.
