Because NoOne Demanded it… Paramount Plans Sequels

Some things are better left alone. Highlander being one of them. In fact there are many movies that didn’t NEED a sequel, and some franchises are just worse off because they bothered to sequel them. Paramount doesn’t agree with me.

Twitch Film reports:

Intent on reviving their once dead properties to join in on the money grubbing, Paramount has joined the fray, starting up a new division to develop and produce sequels, prequels and remakes of popular titles from the libraries of Paramount Pictures, Paramount Vantage, DreamWorks, MTV Films and Nickelodeon Movies reports Slash Film.

Amongst the titles that could be on the list are Beverly Hills Cop, Crocodile Dundee, Clueless, Collateral, Coming to America, Days of Thunder, Deep Impact, Event Horizon, Face/Off, Forrest Gump, Ghost, Grease, Indecent Proposal, Tomb Raider, Mean Girls, Mission: Impossible, School for Scoundrels, Star Trek, The Addams Family, The Brady Bunch Movie, The Italian Job, The Longest Yard, The School of Rock, and Top Gun.

So with the exception of Star Trek and maybe continued Tomb Raider movies, I just can’t see any reason to give sequels or prequels to ANY of these films.

Lets not kid ourselves though. Its not about reason. Its not about common sense. It is about the money. If they think they have even the slimmest chance of making a buck off of another Brady Bunch movie, you know they will pony up and we will see as many of them as the public pays for.

Many of these movies were great in the simple fact that they didnt NEED to be retold, or expanded upon. Forrest Gump is brilliant in that it tells the WHOLE story. Where do you add more to that?

I will always be a super huge movie nut. But even in the party mix, I skip over those cheezey stick shaped things.

  1. No one is SURPRISED. I said its sad that they will do this JUST to make money. No real effort will be put out to make a valid extension of these franchises. They will just fart them out for the sake of cashing another cheque.

  2. why do people act surprised that studios are making films to make money??

every film you see from a mainstream studio has been made to make money. no studio picture has ever been greenlit on the basis that it is art and probably won’t make a cent but what the hell lets fund it….

there is no point complaining about films being made purely for the money…that is all studios care about…..all these big films we are all exfited about this year ..300, transformers, spider-man 3 , simpsons pirates bourne etc etc have been made with one goal in mind TO MAKE MONEY … you think the studio heads give a fuck about our enjoyment??

if there is money to be made in tomb raider academy – the raunchy collage adventures of a young lara croft then they are going to make it…
if they smell a doallr to be had from indecent proposal 2: indecent propasaler then they are going to make it..all they want is money from everything they make..

by all means complain about the fact that most of these films will probably pieces of shit but to complain they are being made purely for money is kind of silly when that is all movies are made for……

  3. Darren, you presumed that I meant these movies were coming out in theatres. I mentioned NOTHING about the format of release. You said that in your attack.

I just said that these movies do not need more chapters. Thats all. You read more into it and said I needed to do more research before I bitch about this news.

No research was needed to see that they are making sequels, prequels and remakes to a library of movies that dont need em. I know the list Twitch offered was a sampling, but my point still stands. They dont need to make them. All they want is the money.

  4. WTF? Why in the hell would anybody want to see a sequel for any of those movies? There is no need for any more Star Trek movies as that franchise really has me burnt out.

  5. Rod, I got my info yesterday from the WENN newswire off IMDB,

    Here’s what it says:

    “Paramount Creates Direct-to-DVD Division

Paramount is setting up a new division to produce movies that will bypass theaters and go directly to DVD. The studio said the unit will be headed by Louis Feola, who previously headed a similar operation at Universal, and will focus on turning out sequels and prequels of theatrical hits. ”

And I didn’t make any presumption about your opinion.

  6. I could see a sequel for Coming to America. You know Eddie likes to play many characters in a movie. Wasn’t it already announced that Eddie was going to do another Beverly Hills Cop?

  7. I read the sequel to Forrest Gump years ago; Gump & Co. It’s very good, he wrote it just after the movie came out. I wouldn’t mind it being made into a movie at all. It’s about Forrest raising his genius son and going through the 80’s and 90’s.
Though by the looks of the info on wikipedia perhaps it’ll never be made:

  8. Darren, no where in the article does it say anything about these movies going direct to screen either. The point is these projects are being made ONLY for the money. I dont care HOW they are being released. You missed the point.

Ironic that you made a presumption about my opinion, then bitch about it?

  9. Every now and then, it would be good if those who post on The Movie Blog, take the time to do a bit more research into a story before bitching.

Slashfilm got it partially right. The list they give is a guess. It does not make it so.
    Twitch reported what Slashfilm wrote.

The original story dealt with Paramount forming a DTV division.

Do some films need sequels? No.

BTW, my brainstorm included Pefect Weapon2 and Tales From The Darkside 2.

  10. Tomb Raider is an awful series. It needs no sequel. Neither do
Beverly Hills Cop, Crocodile Dundee, Clueless, Collateral, Coming to America, Days of Thunder, Deep Impact, Event Horizon, Face/Off, Forrest Gump, Ghost, Grease, Indecent Proposal, Mean Girls, Mission: Impossible, School for Scoundrels, Star Trek, The Addams Family, The Brady Bunch Movie, The Italian Job, The Longest Yard, The School of Rock, and Top Gun. What a coincidence, that’s every movie on the list!

Mean Girls REALLY doesn’t need a sequel, and if there is one, it’ll prob be straight to DVD. I doubt kids flocking to a sequel to that movie if the original cast isn’t there, and I’m pretty sure that McAdams is too big to go back to that role. Hohan’s too coked up to work right now, so she’s out, and she was the draw at that time for girls to see the movie. Can you imagine that flick with Hilary Duff as lead? YIKES!

  11. “So with the exception of Star Trek and maybe continued Tomb Raider movies, I just can’t see any reason to give sequels or prequels to ANY of these films.”

I can’t understand why Tomb Raider should be worthy of a sequel when both the films in that franchise have sucked ass but Mission:Impossible shouldn’t when all three films have been good -yes, even the second one.

  12. This makes me angry. Some of my fave films are in that list. They don’t need sequels/prequels or remakes, they are fine as they are & should not have their reputations tarnished by greedy execs who need another hit of crack & a hooker to beat up!!
