DiCaprio Nominated For Best SUPPORING Actor For The Departed?!?!

What the hell? How damn stupid is this? The Screen Actors Guild just released their nominations for this year’s SAG awards, and for the most part they all look ok (not great… but ok). But there is one huge thing on this list stands out to me like Doug Nagy teaching a sexual abstinence class.

The Departed is by far the best film of the year and will win the Oscar (and perhaps FINALLY give Martin Scorsese his Best Director trophy), and I’ve said from day 1 that it would be a crime if the star of the movie, Leonardo DeCaprio, didn’t get nominated for Best Actor. Well… SAG has nominated DiCaprio for his role in The Departed… but they fucking nominated him for Best SUPPORTING actor. WTF?!?! Are they high on huff???

For ANYONE who has seen The Departed, you know Dicaprio is the LEAD in the film. He has the most screen time, the most dialog, yadda yadda yadda… how the hell do they justify nominating him for the best SUPPORTING actor??? This is just plain stupid.

Yesterday I hear a reporter explain that THERE ARE NO RULES as to what defines a lead or supporting actor, and therefore they can put anyone in whichever category they want. That’s even MORE stupid.

So basically the lesson here today is that LEAD actor and SUPPORTING actor are all the same fucking thing. You just nominate the weaker ones for Supporting, and the better ones for Lead, and they both get to call themselves SAG winners. How utterly and mind numbingly fucking ridiculous.

HEY SAG… YOU’RE A BUNCH OF FREAKING IDIOTS. Now, would that be a LEAD insult, or a SUPPORTING one? Just curious.

  1. Jack Nicholson is the star of The Departed in that you can’t watch anybody else when he’s on screen. He RUINS every goddamn scene he’s in with his lame gags and arsing around. The thing with the dildo is just embarrassing and his rat impression is the dumbest thing he’s ever done, including Anger Management.

Some hack took Infernal Affairs, took out all the spirituality, the regret, the POINT of the Lau/Damon character, inserted a lame love-triangle that goes nowhere, a walking plot point in Mark Wahlberg and a bunch of sub-par David Mamet-wannabe dialogue which is delivered by a bunch of back-slapping Hollywood oldies doing the exact same roles they’ve filled a million times before. Alec Baldwin as a swearing boss? Jack Nicholson running around like a moron making stupid, unfunny jokes? DiCaprio clenching his jaw and doing very little else? I’m a fan of all of these actors and I was a fan of all of these performances when they were done the first time around in better films. It took them 40 minutes to get to the meat of the story and the meat turned out to be Spam. It’s a muddled, overlong, mediocre bunch of arse with a childish ending and a rubbish last shot.

The Departed is to Infernal Affairs what Buffalo Bill was to his young female victims in Silence Of The Lambs. He took something beautiful, peeled it off, tucked his nuts between his legs and danced around wearing it with a scarf. It’s the same skin but it ain’t the same young woman.

(Apologies for the language. I get carried away.)

  2. DiCaprio is the lead by all means. But I guess this is the way this business is done.

On the ending: I do not think Martin Scorsese is the guy who can be forced to “do” certain ending to the movie he is directing. The last shot was great and it fit the movie tone. As I recall the same was said about the last dialogue of Munich – people were saying that the last dialogue was not required, that everything was said and that it “held the audiences hands”. Does anybody here thinks that Mr. Spielberg was forced to do this? No. Nor was Mr. Scorsese. The Departed is the story he told and the last shot was how he ended it.

  3. those bastards at the film actors guild are facked. supporting role? come on now! To all that disagree…………….we shall meet in hamilton, prepare to get yur ass kickered!

  4. you forget that most people need their hand held when it comes to understanding the most simple of things…the movie in general would make most people say “well, how the hell???” many times…most people can’t nor want to draw their own conclusion on a lot of the “plot holes” so maybe marty fed the plebeians an easy one

  5. I just thought the last shot was to much of the director holding the audiences hand. It seemed a bit amateurish to me, and I think Marty should have been recognized for some of his better work not this film. I liked The Departed, I just didnt think it was great…I feel if Marty gets best pic or director it will be because of his past movies. And I know the Academy does this often I just cant agree with it. I got the darkly undercurrent, especially with Jack’s and Walberg’s performances, I just thought they were more campy then anything. I mean imagine if Ray Winstin played Jack’s role instead…

  6. DevonRoy,

Why would the studio force that last shot into THE DEPARTED? While a little on-the-nose, it’s a touch that’s very quirky and irreverant — not exactly what Hollywood begs for. Besides, there is a darkly comical undercurrent running through the entire movie, so the last shot fit the tone.

  7. What the fuck? Why don’t they just nominate him for best actress while they’re at it? Thatmake about just as much sense. Who cares right? Sag is gay.

  8. Can anyone say miscast for putting Jack N. in the departed? The Departed is the most overrated film of the year…I think. Do any of you guys actually believe Marty let that last shot in the picture? He had to have been pressured into that. Leo was good, but Damon and Walberg stole the show in this movie. I think they were both the leads and had equal time on screen.

  9. THe point here folks is not if Leo shoudl win or not. That’s irrelevant. The point is that the SAG seem to have two different categories with… as Kristina said above, nothing that distinguishes them apart from each other at all.

The “pick and choose” analogy is perfect here. These people have 2 categories, one for LEAD and one for SUPPORTING. Two different categories… but according to them, it doesn’t matter at all which one you’re put in. There is no differnce betwen LEAD or SUPPORTING. You had a 1 man show, but think you have a better chance of winning is you’re listed in the “SUPPORTING” category? Ok, even though you were the only person in the film, we’ll nominate you for BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR. Everyone is happy. It’s total bullshit.

  10. Wow, your soo angry. I agree with you that it’s a shame, but it is better for DeCaprio that he is nominated for two different awards not fighting himself to get the best actor, because according to Darren he is nominated for best actor for Blood Diamond.

  11. Where is Nagy when you need him to say COCKSHIT! Totally blind to not see Leo is the lead in the film. There is a monsterous difference between a lead role and a supporting role.

John Hurt gets nominated for an Oscar for a supporting role for 5 minutes of screen time in A History of Violence. That’s a supporting role.

I’m with Jarred. For them (S.A.G.) not to have at least a definition of what a category is, is just plain nonsense. The award has no merrit or meaning if you just get to pick and choose who goes where and what gets awarded to who with no idea or rules for what distinguishes the two from each other. COCKSHIT I say! COCKSHIT!

  12. This is so fucking stupid. It’s like playing “take your pick”. They just shuffle around the noms to accomodate whatever outcome they want. This is so stupid.

I don’t think DiCaprio whould win best actor myself John, but you’re bang on about how fucking retarded sag is on this. No definitions for the categories? How stupid.

  13. don’t blame sag…..the studios push their artists through for awards and they pick which catagory they are pushing each actor for. The studio will feel dicaprio has a better shot at winning supporting actor over winning best actor so they are probably pushing him in that direction…plus he isn’t the lead actor of the film….

and he is as much the lead of the film as damon is.

the studio will also be worried about his performance in blood diamond getting nominated as well and splitting the vote.

  14. Chill out dude! Dicaprio is good on the brilliant The Departed but is far away to be the best performance of the year, i will worry for Sergi Lopez (Pans Labyrinth), Aaron Eckhart (Thank you for smokin), Ray Winstone (The Proposition), guys who really need the shot, better performances then Dicaprio.
So he might be in the Best suporting actor category, but at least he will be nominated for sure.

  15. No, John, SAG aren’t fucking idiots. (However…the overpraise for Babel does question sanity)…your rant is ill placed. Calm down. SAG tends to also acknowledge an actor’s work for any/all work he/she has done in a year. In fact, I’m going to do something here you did NOT do but should have done.
