Will Matt Damon Play Kirk? No.

Sometimes us film fans (I do this too all the time) are so desperate to want to believe something, that we’ll take a bit of information, twist it until it doesn’t even look like itself anymore, and then believe it. Take the whole thing with Matt Damon as Captain Kirk rumors.

Star Trek fans (me included) was so excited when the first rumors were floating around that Matt Damon was going to be Kirk. Then, it came out that it was 100% false. But now, Matt Damon has come out and said something that tons of other websites and fans have twisted into him saying “I want to do it”. When someone asked him if he would ever consider playing Captain Kirk, Matt Damon said what 99.9% of actors always say when hypothetically asked if they would play a certain role… Damon said:

“If the script was good, I’d do it,”

That’s it. That’s all he said folks. When asked if he would ever consider playing Kirk, he said what all actors say about any role… “If the script was good, I’d do it”. Nothing to write about or get excited about right?

Well this morning, sites all over the place are writing stories with the headline “MATT DAMON WANTS TO PLAY KIRK!!!” Excuse me??? Where the hell did they get that from??? I read their articles, and they based their headline on that same quote I just gave you… “If the script was good, I’d do it”. How the hell are these people taking “If the script was good, I’d do it” when asked if he would ever consider it, to “MATT DAMON WANTS TO PLAY KIRK!”

Calm down my beloved international friends. Matt Damon did NOT say he wanted the role. Period. All he said was what every other actor says in the same situation.

Is it even possible that Matt Damon could eventually end up playing Kirk (a horrible move if he did)? Yes, it is possible. And yes, that would be cool… but I highly highly highly doubt it. It would be a no-win situation for him.

  1. Hey Kaonashi

You’re talking as if the title of the post was “Daniel Craig Says Bond Is Gay”

That would be misleading. But it wasn’t. Why would someone reading the title… a title that doesn’t even mention Daniel Craig at all… jump to the wild and unfouded conclusion that “James Bond Gay”? would inffer that Daniel Craig made a statement about wanting the James Bond Character to be gay? That huge stretch.

Besides, the point of this post is not misleading TITLES. The point was that many of these other site (and most of them are GREAT sites) not only give a misleading title… but a misleading idea throughout. Passiing off the idea that Damon claims to want to do Star Trek, when a simple look at what was said clearly doesn’t say that.

  2. John, yes I know from the “James Bond Gay?” article that you stressed that Craig never said that he wanted a gay James Bond, but judging from some of the comments you had received in that post, the title of your post was still misleading. I don’t see how phrasing it in the form of a question makes it less misleading. The first thing that people see are those three words.

I’m just saying that The Movie Blog sometimes has misleading headlines too. Maybe it’s unintentional or maybe it’s done to catch the reader’s eye. Nevertheless, if you don’t want people to get confused, then it would be a good idea to write clearer headlines.

  3. John Campea is a Star Trek fan? I learn something new every day.
Are you going to take back the incorrect ‘7 out of 8’ comment from the other day?
    ‘Star Trek is dead’?

    Nope. Didn’t think so.

On this post: even if the script is good, Matt is booked solid for the time JJ would want to film it, correct? I also think the Kirk angle should be dropped. Put Pike in there instead.

Next thing you know, someone will say Ben Affleck will play Mr. Spock.

    See?

  4. In some cases perhaps John, but I bet there are many actors who have no interest in being involved in anything Trek and would have no problem expressing that. Damon gave the best answer possible in this type of scenario.

  5. Ah, the Fox News tactic. If you use a question mark it’s not a statement of fact. “Democrats eat their young?” “James Bond Gay?” How very…uh… “nouveau journalist” of you. ;-)

  6. Well Kaonashi

if you read the Bond Gay? article, you’d know the question (And it was a question… hence the question mark… was about the issue that got raised… not because Daniel Craig said it. Read… then speak

  7. So a lot of movie news websites/blogs are putting up as their headlines that Damon will play Kirk eh? Even when he didn’t say that?

Kind of like when The Movie Blog used the headline, “James Bond Gay?”, even though in reality Daniel Craig was merely suggesting to include gay scenes in the next James Bond movie?

  8. aha…I see now. Yeah when I first saw it I did think the article was going to be that he had said he wasn’t interested…

although I am sure that is what he is saying in his head….but then again….a decent script and a few $$$ who knows….

  9. Hey Alfie,

Perhaps the headline is a little misleading now that I look at it again. It’s meant to read like a question… and then me giving my opinion saying “no”. But now that I look at it again, I can see what you’re saying

  10. So whats the difference between your headline and the headlines you are complaining about? you are complaining about other headlines twisting something round, which they have done, but then your headline is just the same on the other side. Your headline makes it sound like it is definitely not going to happen when that is not what this news says either.

I totally agree with you about everything you have written in the article but to me the headline you have used is just as misleading as the other sites!!

I cannot see Damon slapping on a uniform and talking about warp drives etc etc

They should set it at the starfleet academy and make it the randy adventures of a young kirk …. make it police academy style!!…starring rob schneider as kirk and Jon hedar as spock….

  11. Hey Lou,

The thing is… even the actors who wouldn’t touch this movie, if asked if they’d ever consider it would say “If I read the script and it was really good, then I’d do it”.

That’s just what they say. If they said “No freaking way”, then they’d piss off a lot of people.

  12. Matt’s always been smart about the roles he’ll play. I’d be surprised if he took this role, cause he’ll be intitled to do sequel upon sequel if it’s good. I don’t see Matt being locked down like that. even w/ the ocean’s movies (which look like more fun than anything else) and the bourne movies, (which doesn’t come out behind each other, meaning year after year) they’ve been in my opinion smarter, and more controled than star trek

unless they are planning a total creative revamp

  13. That’s what I love about this site. You fucking tell it like it is man! So many of these fanboy sites are just pathetic. And I like how you said that Matt could possibly agree to it in the future, but that this ain’t that announcement just yet. Good call John boy.

  14. As much of a Trek fan that I am, and as cool as Matt
being Kirk would be awesome, one can’t assume too much
when reading a comment from another report.
I go by: Believe half of what you see and none of what you read.
Excellent coverage by you John, giving the straight scoop.

    Thank you.
    Shane

  15. WTF is up with that headline? He said he’d do it if the script was good and you post a headline that he won’t do it?
