Punisher 2 gets a Writer

I am a big comic book movie nut. I will take ANY comic book movie in and treat them all fairly. I honestly havent seen one I hated yet, but there are still a lot of Comic based movies to come.

The Punisher movie was one that was ok, but far from “great” but since other less popular comic book movies are getting a second chance, why not Punisher?

ComingSoon says:

Stuart Beattie (the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, 30 Days of Night, Collateral) is writing the new script. Jane also described the film:

Concerning The Punisher 2, Tom says he’d like to make a drama, without any goofy stuff. “Just straight noir, drama, with the inherent blood and guts in it.” Jane also says it will definitely take place in New York.

So now with the writer for some of the best selling movies in the last couple years (and one highly anticipated one) is on board. This doesnt guarantee success for a sequel, but it sure as hell doesnt hurt.

This follows news of the Hulk getting a redux (not a sequel) and other superhero sequels playing against the shortcomings of its origins, will this spell a new phase for sequels? We often hesitate to get behind the news of a sequel because they tend to not stack up against the original, but it seems efforts are really being made to improve the quality of these followups.

  1. The first Punisher was a ridicolous piece of shit. How anybody can like this film is beyond me. It’s right on the top with that Elektra-movie as the worst comic book movie ever. Thomes Jane was laughable as The Punisher, the story was stupid beyond belief and worst of all: the action was just lame. There’s no chance in hell i’d watch a sequel to this.

  2. I liked the first movie, and bringing in the writer behind Collateral is a good sign too. I’m eager for a sequel.

I just got the frist two hardcover trade collections of The Punisher MAX line by Garth Ennis. I’ve read the first one, and thought it lends itself to how a Punisher movie should go. A straight noir drama is good, but you have to bring a little humor to it too. It just has to be done with little ironies throughout and dark humor. A few dark one liners, not a fat guy falling through a door.

Either way, I’m just glad this sequel is moving ahead.

  3. being a huge punisher fan. i HATED this movie. i could not see how they f’ed up a revenge film. from the “johnny cash” assassian to killing the main bad guy while making a punisher sign on the ground w/ flames (PLEASE!) this movie was horrible on so many levels

i don’t know how much beattie cost these days to be a writer, but if he’s writing it i will really consider watching a sequel

  4. i loved the punisher i was so eager to se i loved it the only thing i wishe it was more darker and more voilent and the new in the last couple of months sounds like that will happen. i carnt wait for the punisher 2 its goging to kick ass.

  5. I’m baffled, and I’ll take this with a grain of salt.

Less than three weeks ago, the script was being written by the first film’s director, Jon Hensliegh, who said he was returning, and was confirmed by Jane. Maybe Beattie is co-writing with Hensleigh?

  6. I think the fact that Travolta isnt in it will make the movie better.
He ruined the movie for me with his constant hamming it up in every scene.

Knowing that Beattie is writing it gives me even more hope for the sequel.

  7. I liked The Punisher. But like Spider-man 2, I am hoping the second movie will be better than the “creation” story. More action, more death, and a bad guy that doesn’t just cry like a little baby at the end. I want a GOOD final battle… a battle that makes the fight with the Russian look like a bitch-slap.

I don’t get why people are always so keen to turn comic book movies into dramas, I agree there is no need to be too goofy, but The Punisher is not that goofy a character anyway. If you want to make a full on drama why bother using a comic book source, why not just make a serious film based on an original idea or a serious book.
