  1. Triflic… OMG… are you actaully saying there is some sort of similarity between Transformers and Sky Captian or Iron Giant???

Good grief… Sky Captian had a love story in it. Guess that means love stories in moves have no appeal. There was also a mystery in it… so that rules out any mystery movies appleal. Oh, there was also a plane in it… and a boat… so any movie with planes and boats are out too.

    :P

  2. While I don’t agree with Jack about the dog and pony show if you are wrong, I still think that Transformers is not going to bring in the hordes of people. Gigantic Robots has a limited appeal when compared something like Titanic or even Star Wars.

Perhaps not the closes points of reference, but SKY CAPTAIN and THE IRON GIANT both of which featured gigantic robots low, low, low box office returns.

  3. Hi John
Wish I could attend the Fest, but alas, I’m here in Virginia. You guys are doing a great thing. I sent a donation and am glad so many others are as well. Can’t wait to hear the podcast from the event!

  4. I hope that this is a big success and that you achieve the goal and then some. If only I could make it to Canada to see it, but you can have my donation anyway.

Good luck with it and can’t wait to hear the Audio Edition from the event.

  5. Oh, and guys…

Sorry about the lack of news the last couple of days, but Sharon is on Vacation, Rodney is swampped at work, and I’ve been up to my ears with F4FF stuff. Don’t worry… posts coming in the morning.

  6. Jack,

Tell you what, you start a website where you make 10 predictions a week, and if you’re wrong you have to do something stupid.

It’s really easy to sit safe behind your little computer, not make your own predictions, and try to call out other people who have the balls to make them.

Man, if I had a dollar for every prediction I’ve made in 3 years on The Movie Blog where people told my I was insane and I turned out to be right I’d be a rich man. :P

However, as I’ve said, IF the transformers is marketed right and the trailers looks as good as I think they’re going to look…. yes… Transformers will break $100 million without breaking a sweat, and most likely destroy POTC 2 opening weekend record.

If however, they don’t market it right and the trailers don’t look as good as we’re hoping… then no, it won’t attract the anxilary audience that it will need to break that record.

All we can do at this point is sit and wait for the full trailers to come. At that point, I’ll lock in my prediction for TF.

  7. By the way,

    John,

You should send an email off to guys over at http://www.newsaskew.com which is the news source for Kevin Smith’s production company View Askew.

As soon as they know that your screening Clerks II at your festival, I’m sure they’ll get right behind you, possibly even Kevin too. Worth a shot! He’s always got heaps of time for fans.

I sent them a little thing to their scoops section to let them know but I’m sure if you sent them something more official, your festival would benefit in a big way

  8. i’m sorry but after making a huge claim about the Transformers’ opening weekend and if he is wrong about it, he has to do something on here. He can’t just simply say “oh i was wrong” and that’s all. I was just throwing in a suggestion out there as what kind of thing he should do. PLUS, if John is truly that confident he is right, then he should have nothing to worry about.

Michael Bay hasn’t had a successful movie without Bruickheimer yet, and Transformers will be another test for that. Sometimes I just wish these big action movies bomb at the box office, just because these movies are all cynical. They think if they put enough money, make enough big explosions, add tons of CGI, then they think they will make a ton of money, get all the masses to watch it. That’s what Transformers is. it’s all very cynical, and for that I wish Transformers flops and Bay learns another lesson.

  9. Settle down Jack, that was a fun and jokey “You Idiot”.

I hardly think John is going spray coke and mentos? in his face and then post in here or youtube. And if he did, I hardly think it would fall into the category of “The Movie Blogs Historical Moments”. I think that category might be saved for Films For Food Fest.

I don’t think Transformers will break any records on opening weekend but it might hit close to the 100 mark. But then again like John has already said, Its all about how they market the thing. For all we know it could be as about as exciting as Thunderbirds! (although I think there is no way that could happen)

Me, I’m an avid Ninja Turtles fan. I skipped Transformers when I was a kid to eat pizza and play with nunchucks (way cooler). But the new trailer for that flick has made not even want to see it anymore!!!! It looks terrible!!

I just hope for all you Transformer fans out there (I reckon we should call you all ‘TRANNIES’ haha) the publicity machine doesn’t ruin it the same way it did for Me & TMNT ….

  10. there is no way on earth transformers will make over 100 million in its opening weekend. no way – I have no doubt it will have a big opening but its three day take will not be over a hundred mill…..maybe if there wasn’t so many big big films around that time..even then i doubt it but next summer is going to be a huge battle..all those big titles all within weeks of each other..it is definitely going to havbe an effect on all of the Bo for all of the films but transformers is not in the same league as pirates, spidey or potter in terms of wide appeal and that is what will hurt it. there is obviously a huge audience for it bit not one that comes close to those other three….and there are so many other big films around that time I just don’t see transformers coming out on top….

oh and koko is right..surely there is some news to post…..come on now!!

  11. idiot? i’m only trying to have some fun with this thing. it wouldn’t be entertaining if John basically said he was wrong and “the end, that’s all folks.” and that’s it? :( kind of a let down.. plus this really does add more suspense to the whole transformers weekend. it would be a real movie blog historical moment!

  12. hey y’know what?

if you’re wrong about the Transformers opening weekend, you need to do something for us… how about you have to smash a few eggs on your face, or get 2 2-liter cokes, mentos, and blast it all over your face while wearing nice dress shirt and tie. and of course you got to film it for us to see.

  13. alright, i want to get things straight about your Transformers prediction. You said it would break the opening weekend of all time record . that means it has to break the POTC 2 record of 135 million or whatever breaks that record from now til Transformers.

if you actually think it could break POTC 2’s record, then you must be getting high or abusing drugs too much.

  14. Yes KRAWLER,

The CROW was a fantastic movie, but as a franchise it unfortunately fell into the category that most movie franchises wind up falling into…crap. City of Angels wasn’t too bad, I actually thought they did a decent job on Salvation, but Eric Mabius was horrible as the Crow, and Kristen Dunst sucked more balls than Richard Simmons, and Wicked Prayer…well, they needed prayer to make a good movie, but alas, it was horrible, almost as bad as Eddie Furlong and Tito Ortiz’s acting combined ;)

The original Crow will forever be a classic. Now I know what I’m watching tonight

  15. Hey Jack,

Will I “eat crow” on transformers weekend? Maybe. Even I can’t be right 100% of the time. But I usually am. :)

Will it be #1 at the boxoffice it’s opening weekend? No doubt… I think everyone agrees on this.

Will it make $100+ million on it’s opening weekend? I think so, but much will deepend on the trailers. If the trailers kick as much ass as I think they will, then yes, opening weekend records.

If the trailers are a let down, or don’t show enough to blow people away, then probably not. We’ll have to wait and see.

  16. John

don’t know if you’ve considered this but: we do quite a bit of fund raising in our village (here in the UK). One of the things that never fails to raise lots of money is a charity auction. I guess this sort of thing would go down very well at your event if you could blag some movie related swag. I think it always seems to work because the generous people will bid against their friends and the cynical people will bid with an eye on ebay :)

    Best of luck
    Brian

  17. Serena
Oh I remember. It was the best theater experience for me this year. I had so much fun with it. You’re insane.

Still, I envy you guys for getting to see “Behind the Mask” again. As I”m sure that’s the “secret” movie.

Hope you’re doing well Serena. See you next year at TAD!

  18. The deed is done.

Here’s hoping an old fart like myself – almost fifty(gawd it makes me feel even older seeing it in type!) – won’t be too out of place.

    Looking forward to meeting everyone!

  19. Thanks for the donation link John. Your UK friends will unite for your worthy cause. I just have.

I’m thinking, your mystery movie isn’t Transformers is it, lol?

  20. John, I assume you’ve worked out if you can legally show your DVDs to a room of 120 people. After all you guys discuss copyright legality it would be silly to be sued by a big film company for “displaying your personal copy publicly”.

Otherwise, it sounds good, though I’m on the other side of the world unfortunately.

  21. Unless my some good windfall occurs within a week, or until I know my schedule(s) for next month, I cannot really go, and it brings sorrow to my heart. What’s more is that I put the info on MapQuest, and MapQuest said there are TWO 333 King Street Easts. I took the closer one. (It also did not list the FWY Coffee, go figure)

It would take me 3 hours, 42 minutes at 213.29 miles.

HOWEVER it is not a bad deal *if* those readers in my area (Mid Michigan, USA) wish to carpool and/or make such arrangements.

Knowing my luck I’ll probably get the bread, have the days off, and be #121.
