Slither DVD Cover Art

Slither-DVD-CoverSometimes I just don’t understand the movie going audience. Slither has easily been one of the best films of the year. It’s scary, funny and has a ton of charm. And yet NO ONE went to see it. Domestically the film only made $7.8 million, and even if you include the international box office it still only make about $12 million in total. This film lots big money. WHERE WERE YOU GUYS!?!?!

Anyway, it may surprise you to know that I don’t actually own a lot of DVDs. Maybe about 70 of them. I like to rent. But the Slither DVD is one I’ll be buying the moment it hits the shelves! I love this film.

The Slither DVD gets released on October 24th (that’s the DVD cover art to the side. The good folks over at Bloody Disgusting give us these details about the release:

The film will receive an anamorphic widescreen transfer, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Extras will include an audio commentary with the director and actor Nathan Fillion, deleted and alternate scenes with optional commentary, a Who is Bill Pardy? feature, visual effects progressions, a gag reel, a video diary, behind the scenes featurette and more.

You can head over there to get a bigger version of the Slither DVD cover art.

  1. SLITHER was a great movie. All of those people who didn’t go see, yah there were millions of you slackers out there, you missed one hell of an entertaining movie.
It took elements that have been done before and put new spins on them and made for a film that I will definitely buy the video for.
    I love movies like this.

  2. Best film . … of what year? Please. This film failed not only because of poor marketing, but also it wasn’t anything that hasn’t been done before.

  3. I was kind of hoping this DVD would have more features than that… I mean not that the release is anything to scoff at, but still… James Gunn studied at the throne of Troma, the undisputed kings of kick ass DVD releases, I was just kind of hoping Slither would get the same treatment…

Oh well, I’m still going to buy the hell out of it…

  4. I only really heard about this movie from The Movie Blog, cuz the TV advertising was negligible. Unfortunately, it was here and gone within less than a week in our local theaters! Crikey! I’ll probably rent it, cuz I’m a little infatuated with that blonde from 40 Year Old Virgin. Hehe.

  5. Dude. I was right there. Opening night in Vancouver with 50 of my closest Browncoat buddies, sitting in front of, none other than Mr. Pardy himself, Nathan Fillion who was in town filming something else. We actually saw it twice on opening weekend with two different groups. Dude. I was there. I was SO there.

  6. Oh man I can’t wait for this DVD. I remember it only came out for a week here. How fucking ignorant is that towards good movies? Anyway I’ll be buying this on DVD the day it comes out.

  7. John, speaking of DVD’s… I AM surprised that you have so few DVDs.
I personally don’t have the willpower the withstand the urge to buy new discs… maybe I stop when I reach 1000 (I have about 850 at the moment) =)

I’ve been waiting for Slither to be released… I don’t think it got a very wide release here in Europe. In most places I think it’s going to straight-to-video. In Australia it will released September 6th with better looking cover art, IMHO.

As for the question: Where was the audience?

I think they were in the same place that Serenity’s audience were =(

But I think it will sell great on DVD.

  8. I actually missed this in theatres. But I’m a big Nathan Fillion and horror fan. So consider the DVD purchased. I’ve read a lot of mixed reviews about the film, but I’m sure I’ll love it.

  9. I was the target market in the teen-twenties male demographic with a huge collection of horror dvds and bookmarks to all those niche sites and thinking STRIKE! couldnt go wrong after Dawn of the Dead 04. Despite all these things I still had no desire to go until I saw the review here.

SLITHER is the second movie I’ve ever walked out of in the theatre. The first was actually Vin Diesel’s THE PACIFIER.

I’m sorry John, but I totally missed the boat. This was the most uncomfortable movie I’ve ever sat through. My friends and I squeamed in our chairs just because it was so… awkward. It felt like the horror movie equivalent of a whole season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. SLITHER just couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. The Gore effects were neat and I think the acting was pretty good, but the funny wasn’t funny and the scary wasnt scary.

I actually left pretty late, comparative to the other people flocking out. I did the first hour (just long enough to not get our money back) because I just kept waiting for all of this horror/comedy to hit… I realize I’m probably missing out on something in the end and I certainly get upset when people try to tell me their feelings on a film without watching the whole thing (and for this purpose I’m sure I’ll rent it or something)…

I guess point being that with no critical or advertising support, this movie’s only shot was word of mouth, and I didn’t hear any good words from the people storming out.

  10. I just watched the trailer for the film and if I just had seen the trailer I wouldn´t go to see it. It just looks like a b-scary/funny movie. Perhaps a good rent but from watching the trailer isn´t anything to get me going to the cinema to see it.

  11. I agree. The marketing of this movie was terrible. I first heard about it in an obscure interview with Jenna Fischer (James Gunn’s wife). And, because I like Nathan Fillion, I continued to follow the production.
But, I none of my family, or anyone at work, knew anything about the film before I mentioned it too them. It just wasn’t ‘out there’.

  12. I don’t think the general movie-going audience can be blamed for why this movie made so little money. Aside from the Movie Blog and a few horror and niche sites, I didn’t hear much about Slither.
