I'm sure somebody already said this, but that's just like the PSP? Why would somebody pay for a UMD of a movie that they can't watch on TV, has no surround sound, few if any special features and usually costs the same or more?

They have lost their minds. Why don't they just use iTunes and price the movies at $4.99 or something. They are already doing that with some of their shorts (priced at a rather high $1.99). At least using iTunes you can share the movie with others (up to 5 other computers I believe), and it is pretty easy to hook up the iPod to the TV. $20 for something I can't share or allow my daughter to watch in her own room, isn't going to cut it for me. Their not saving me all that much money in travel expenses that I still can't go on over to BestBuy or Circuit City to grab a new release. If companies want to make downloadable films a reality they need to sell it to the consumer not screw us.

Ahh, sorry Arethusa, forgot to simplify for some who may not understand. You see, if they were to follow though with their plans, I'm saying that some people could be fooled into buying these overpriced movies. And it is those people that Disney might be targeting, after all why sell something at 10 dollars if you can sell the same amount for 20. But obviously if the movie dl don't sell, or someone else sells dl for less, the price will be adjusted accordingly. Let me know if you need further clarification. :)

People are putting the onus on "burning to DVD" not necessarily because of the popular format but because they are selling the films for TWENTY DOLLARS EACH.

Twenty dollars. If a single downloadable film is going to cost that much, then people are going to ask what else are they getting, hence the "burning to DVD", questions about extras, the points about lack of packaging etc.

Really folks, jump off the "Wave...of the future" train.

If this is merely a "testing of the waters" they better have a stellar marketing campaign so they can get people to actually participate.

... I think they are just testing the water so to speak, I don't think this will in anyway reflect the business model they eventually come to.

I doubt CinemaNow could actually handle the volume of business at the moment if this was the low price download to burn service that people are hoping for.

I do think people are putting to much onus on burning to DVD, yes its want people want right now, but it will be replaced in the end by either the new HD formats or and I think this is what Disney is eyeing in the future and kc and Alan Greene where alluding to here, the future will be Solid State.

To me , it's pretty obvous the explanation for this insane scheme is: internal struggle at Disney's between the "guys making money selling DVDs" and the "new guys who want to make money selling movies online".

So the boss settles the dispute by saying: OK guys, you can sell downloads - BUT the price has to be the same as DVDs, otherwise the "DVD department" will not be pleased - and their customers (Amazon, Video stores, etc...) will give us hell if we sell cheap downloads.

I definitely wouldn't pay $20 for a movie download if I can't burn it to dvd and even if I could I probably wouldn't.

Who are they targetting this at though? The kids that watch the movies? Sure, they're going to get out their credit cards or use their paypal accounts to pay for this right? Wrong, it's the parents that will be forking out for the movies and I can't think why any parent would want to pay $20 for a movie a kid can only watch on the computer.

If they are aiming this at the adult market, as some of the movies do appeal to some adults, then I think its niche market and they wouldn't make anywhere near as much money as they would if they halved the price.

just my opinion.
