World Cup 2006 Documentary

MichaelApted.jpgFor all you football (soccer) fans out there, this one’s for you. The director Michael Apted is planning on filming a documentary of the World Cup, except it seems, from s other viewpoints than just football. From Film Stew:

Daily Variety reports the Michael Apted Football Project is already in production, having put down in South Africa and Iran, as well as the U.S.

Apted has plans to shoot in the U.K., Argentina, Senegal and wrap the picture in Germany during the 2006 World Cup competition. Apted…is following six different footballers with contrasting stories linked to the game…how football for them is a means of protest, a door to stardom or just a way out of crushing poverty.

It sounds really interesting to me, and I don’t like football. I can see some amazingly stirring scenes coming out of this, and with the level of passion involved in the game – never mind the added passions described above – this could be one hell of a documentary. Or…it could be a mockery of violence, racism and bullying, as much of football can be at club level. Hopefully though I’m wrong, and we can see some of the better side of football that I’m continually being told there is.
