Goldeneye Director back for next Bond

MartinCampbell.jpgThe news is all over the place that Martin Campbell who directed Goldeneye will be directing Bond 21, and what is Bond 21 to be? Casino Royale no less.

Now, just to clear up straight away, Casino Royale was a movie made outside of the franchise and not in the style of the Broccoli Bond at all! Coming Soon has more:

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the James Bond films, and MGM announced today that Martin Campbell will direct Casino Royale, the 21st film in the 007 franchise.

Wilson and Broccoli said: “We are thrilled that Martin has accepted our offer to direct ‘Casino Royale’. He is an extremely talented director and we believe he will help take our films in a new and exciting direction. He is currently finishing filming ‘The Legend of Zorro’, the sequel to ‘The Mask of Zorro’, and will be joining EON Productions shortly to work on the development of the script with our writers, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.”

MGM Vice Chairman and COO Chris McGurk said: “Martin is an incredibly exciting filmmaker. ‘Goldeneye’ was a wonderful movie and helped reinvigorate the Bond franchise. We’re thrilled to have him back to direct the newest Bond.”

Well I guess it’s not all bad, he did do quite a good job on Goldeneye considering where the whole franchise was, but it’s right back to that point again. Do they think Campbell can make it work once again? I think it’s real short sightedness not to be getting Tarantino and Brosnan on the case.

Now, can they get on with it and tell us who the next Bond actually is? It’s driving me mad!

  1. I doubt either will make it. Michael is spot on pegging Ewan as already belonging to the Star Wars crew. Too well known now to be the next Bond, and Clive Owen is heading that way rapidly. With Brosnan having left (or rather not allowed to renew) I’m not sure who the real lead is, although I would love it to be Dougray Scott.

  2. But… Ewan already has an iconic character (Obi-Wan) in his filmography. He doesn’t really need a second one. Wait, scratch that… worked just fine for Harrison Ford to have two, didn’t it?
