I think I’ve died and gone to heaven. I make no secret at all of the fact that I’m a HUGE admirer of Darren Aronofsky and I’ve been watching in agony as project after project has fallen apart on him … Seriously, this guy is just as snake bitten as Terry Gilliam when it comes to getting a project off the ground. The Batman picture he co-scripted with Frank Miller got the kibosh, who knows if his Lone Wolf and Cub adaptation will ever get off the ground, and most spectacularly his big budget sci-fi pic The Fountain got killed when star Brad Pitt walked out (reportedly because he couldn’t understand the script) a mere week before shooting was scheduled to start. Well, two sweeeeeet pieces of Aronofsky news have just bubbled to the surface …
First: The Fountain is back on with Hugh Jackman taking over the role that was to be Brad Pitt’s. Hugh makes me a happy man. Cate Blanchett, Ellen Burstyn, and Aronofsky regular Sean Gullette round out the cast.
Second: This is the biggie. Aint it Cool is reporting that once Aronofsky finishes work on The Fountain he’ll be moving on to make The Watchmen, a film based on the classic, Hugo Award winning, graphic novel. A Watchmen film has been rumored for at least ten years with a slew of directors names floating around, including Terry Gilliam’s at one point. The Watchmen is dense and difficult yet stunning material if handled correctly, and my money says Aronofsky’s the right guy. Whee!

It would be great to see a screen adaptation of Watchmen by Aronofsky. He is definitely the man for the job.
Ditching Aronofsky’s and Miller’s Batman project was total lunacy. I hate to think what a pile of garbage the new Batman film will be without either of them on board. Probably Blade with a cape. Lots of pseudo gothic references without any real bite just like the Blade series. Blade was a great idea ruined by commercial concerns.
I hope we will get to see a new film adaptation of the classic Lone Wolf and Cub comic. I liked the 70’s films but would like to see a new adaptation which stays truer to the original story than these did.
If the story is going to be set in the 20/21st century as some have suggested, (which I personally wouldn’t reccomend as it removes too many of the cultural references which are essential to the original comic’s central plot) then Aranofsky is the only man to trust.
I was muttering something along the lines of Aronofsky being one of the last decent really really creative directors left, so personnally I think this is quite good news!

Actually, the Fountain’s already back in pre-production. They’re pretty much good to go.
Bah, this is bad news. It seems like everytime Aronofsky is attached to a project, it dies untill he leaves.
Lets look at The Fountain. Unless its filming in the next few months, the earliest Hugh Jackman can film it is late 2005. The whole thing is a train in search of derailment once again.
I would LOVE to see the Watchmen hit the big screen.
They are what heros WOULD be like in the real world. Even if their world is less than real!
