Life Imitates Art - Did Movies Pave the way for a Black President?

Categories: News Chat | By Rodney |

I stayed up late last night to watch CNN’s updates on the Election, when they announced Obama had crossed the finish line first, I went to bed. I slept well.

This morning I got to thinking about how everyone is focusing on the “First Black President” and I joked with my wife that he wasn’t the first. Of course Morgan Freeman and the guy from Fifth Element sprung to mind first, but way back in 1972 (mine and John’s Birth year) when it was a bigger controversy, James Earl Jones played a president on screen.

So I did a quick search on IMDB and found a list of other Black Presidents.

The Man (1972) - President Douglas Dilman - James Earl Jones
The Fifth Element (1997)- President Lindberg - Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr
Deep Impact (1998) - President Tom Beck - Morgan Freeman
Head of State (2003) - President Mays Gilliam - Chris Rock with black running mate Bernie Mac
Idiocracy (2006) - President Alonzo Camacho - Terry Crews
24 - Wayne and David Palmer - D.B. Woodside, Dennis Haysbert

Darth Vader gets an honourable mention since he is more machine than man, and that machine is painted black. And with the exception of one very weak “noooooo!” he was voiced by a black man (James Earl Jones) …also he was technically only Vice President to that raisin of a Sith Lord, but he did all the real work.

So has film eased the path of racial acceptance to accepting a black president? Its hardly a new thing in films and TV to depict the president with a black actor. However one thing I did notice is that in movies like Head of State and The Man, the title characters end up in the presidency (or race to) by some sort of accident. Glossing over the plausibility that such a person would have got their on their own.

I think there is a long bitter line that leads back to a different era in history that still influences people today, but at the end of this day we are in a different era where we have moved past that naive way of thinking, but some people are brought up with different values and cannot see outside of them.

I have tended to live a colour-blind existence, and the ethnicity of a president doesn’t mean a lot to me, but I am not ignorant of social injustices that might have prevented this in the past. Race is just the excuse given to to discriminate instead of looking at the politician’s platform or capabilities.

I was impressed that I didn’t hear a lot of people throwing the race card out there when trying to discredit President Elect Obama. I was waiting for it, but I guess for the most part people realize how quickly that argument would be shot down. But imagine 50 years ago, and how those conversations would be different.

Since us Canadian folk who run the Movie Blog were not allowed to vote in your election, all we could do was form our own opinions. We were not shy with them, but we form a symbiont circle with these United states. What happens to the Naboo will affect the Gungans. We see that. And no. I don’t think Canadians are Gungans.

So while everyone is saying, “First Black President! We are watching history in the making” keep in mind that it is just another President, and every election shapes history regardless of the colour of his skin. His ethnicity is a trophy of progress for racial acceptance and I hope that the world is a better place with every President you elect.

I can’t wait until you elect a woman!

Edit: This discussion is about the fading Racial Tension in the US, and if you think depicting the President as a black man had anything to do with it. (Or perhaps the other way around) Please refrain from making this a platform to insult the candidates.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

Lake-Bell-030608-01-Thumb

We have some news today about a new sex comedy in the works called A Good Old Fashioned Orgy. We get the following scoop from our friends at MTV:

It’s an upcoming sex comedy about a guy named Eric (played by “SNL”’s Jason Sudeikis) who has been living at his parents’ house in the Hamptons, until his father (played by Don Johnson) decides to sell it. Eric wants to throw one last party to end all parties, and decides to throw an orgy.

“It’s like ‘The Big Chill,’ but with an orgy at the end,” laughed co-star Lake Bell when we caught up with her at the premiere of her latest film, “Pride and Glory.” “Or is there? They invite you over for it, but whether it happens, that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms.”

Well I will tell you one thing. With a title like this - there better be a fucking orgy; otherwise you can name the film Cocktease In The Hamptons.

This premise does sound promising. It reminds me of an 80’s ski/sex comedy but without the skiing. I hope this comes to fruition because I like what I am hearing thus far. Don Johnson as the father is down right classic. I hope he shows up halfway through the orgy and shows everyone how old money really parties.

Lake Bell certainly looks built for speed in the above photo and we will be sure to shoot you the updates as they are made available to us.

Michael Douglas Honoured with Producer’s Lifetime Achievement

Categories: News Chat | By Rodney |

Michael Douglas will be honoured among his peers as a Producer early next year with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Michael Douglas will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Producers Guild of America during the group’s annual bash at the Hollywood Palladium on January 24, it said Monday.

This guy has my respect. It is not often that you can list an actor in Hollywood today that has had such a good track record as Michael Douglas. He deserves every bit of praise.

He is a class act, and I for one salute you Mr Douglas for all your achievements! and bedding Catherine Zeta Jones!

Here is Eddie Grant singing the song from the movie, Romancing the Stone:

When the machetti turns into a guitar for that solo… serious 80s golden cheese.

Eric Bogosian Would Be Game For Under Siege 3

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

Ericbogosian ChoiceEric Bogosian spilled his guts to MTV about the possibility of an Under Siege 3. Check out what he had to say -

Eric Bogosian in ‘Under Siege 2: Dark Territory’Steven Seagal recently told MTV News that he’s been looking at offers for a third installment of his “Under Siege” series, which he would prefer to be more modern, even more sci-fi. If that’s the case, could there be a little room for Travis Dane, who’s faked his death at least once and perhaps didn’t actually die at the end of “Under Siege 2: Dark Territory”?

“He hadn’t talked to me about it,” Eric Bogosian, who played Dane, told us when we caught up with him at the Directors Guild Honors. “But I had a blast doing it before. It’s one of the most fun things I was ever involved with.” “If we could do it with Geoff Murphy, the director [for 'Under Siege 2’], that would be a lot of fun,” Bogosian said. “Geoff had a great sense of humor. It took us a while to get each other. I didn’t realize I’d be dealin with a guy as funny as that, but once we started getting it, we were very in sync. So yeah, I’d be happy to do it again. It was a lot of fun.”

There has been a bunch of chatter lately about the possibility of another Under Siege movie. I saw the first one years ago, have not yet seen the second; but would be game for a third. I generally dislike needless sequels, but in the world of action and horror, they make more sense; and can be a lot of fun. I am also going to take any opportunity that I can to see Stephen Segal breaking limbs.

Who knows if this film will end up happening. I think it’s funny that people are letting it be known that they are game for another round. If their interest sparks flames of desire within the film community perhaps we will see an Under Siege 3. We have seen worse venture on the silver screen in recent history; could the world be ready to welcome Segal anew? Could Under Siege 3 be a triumphant return to glory?!

Make it so.

Farrelly Brothers to Remake the Three Stooges

Categories: News Chat | By Rodney |

Apparently they have been trying to do this for a while now and I really don’t know why they would try. But today Mary Parent, chairman of Worldwide Motion Picture Group announced that they are moving forward with a modern retelling of the Three Stooges with Bobby and Peter Farrelly’s screenplay which the Farrelly brothers will also direct.

ComingSoon.net says:

“The Three Stooges are a timeless staple of comedy and when we heard what the Farrellys had in mind we knew it was time for Larry, Moe and Curly to return to the big screen,” Parent commented.

There have been numerous manifestations of The Three Stooges but their relationship with MGM dates back to 1933 when the trio appeared in a series of shorts and features for the Lion. The Farrelly Brothers have been working on a modernization of the Stooges, ’slapstick with heart’ concept since the mid-90s. But it was their decision to focus on an origin story for Larry, Moe and Curly and thus introduce the three to a new generation that pushed the picture onto the fast track.

I think this fails under TMB’s 4 Rules of a Remake.

1) The original has to have a good story
Story? There is no story to the Three Stooges. They get thrown into ordinary or silly situations and then smack each other around. There is a little more to it than that, but in the big picture, there is no actual story to be told here. This is not a biopic, it is Stooges return to the big screen. No story.

2) Majority of current audience hasn’t seen the original
Yes, this show was in black and white in syndication when I was a kid. The majority of the moving going audience hasn’t seen this.

3) Original has to be at least 20 years old
See above.

4) The story would benefit from a modern telling
Benefit? No. This does not need to be retold or made modern. The slapstick genre that this comedy embodies is fine in its original form. We don’t need this to be “updated” as it does date itself but the core of it, the slapstick, is not affected by any of it.

I imagine this is going to be horrible. I see no need to “revive” the slapstick genre, as I don’t think it has a place in modern cinema at all, and I honestly dont think there is a market for a pure slapstick movie that isnt called “Jackasss” and thats already scraping the bottom of the intellectual barrel.

Mark Twitchell: Canadian Murderer And Screenwriter

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

Canadian-Flag1We have a bizarre news story for you today about a Dexter fan who decided to write a screenplay about murder, and then murder people that way. We get the extended news piece thanks to our friends at IESB:

From AFP: “Canadian filmmaker has been charged in a murder plot eerily similar to one of his horror movies, media said Monday. Mark Twitchell, 29, was charged Saturday with the murder of Johnny Altinger in what police believe is a case of life imitating art. Police believe the victim was lured on October 10 to a garage where Twitchell made movies on the promise of a date with a woman he had met online.

They seized a script written by Twitchell about a killer who lured a man to his death under similar circumstances.

They are also looking for another man believed to have escaped from the garage a week before Altinger went missing. Witnesses told police he was attacked by a man in a hockey mask as he fled.”

But not only did this guy dabble in horror films but actually starred in and directed a Star Wars fan film called Star Wars: Secrets of the Rebellion that starred Jeremy Bulloch, yep, Boba Fett himself. According to the news reports Twitchell is also an obssessed fan of Dexter.

This is the second crazy psycho killer Canada has had this year. First it was the bus decapitator, now this guy shows up and gives Dexter a bad wrap. I am not surprised, there are many copycat killers, and it was only a matter of time before a fan of Dexter followed suit. Regardless of your opinion on TV, we can all agree that people who desire to kill probably think Dexter is an awesome show.

I’m curious to see if this guys script will make it to the net and I’m wondering how true to the story he was able to get. Was he murdering according to the script and trying to fulfill it in real life like a perverse to do list? I am glad this guy was caught, because the field research for his projects involves murder.

International friends - if you ever have the overwhelming urge to kill someone, please inform your local authorities so they may direct you to a place of counseling and hold you accountable. In the meantime, if you must let loose your rage on someone, egg their house.

Cruise And Theron Team Up In The Tourist

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

CharlizeWe have word today that princess Theron will be teaming up with commander cruise in The Tourist. We get the following scoop from our friends at the movieweb:

Charlize Theron is in talks to star with Tom Cruise in The Tourist, director Bharat Nalluri’s remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer.

According to Variety, the Julian Fellowes-scripted drama centers on a female Interpol agent who uses an American tourist in an attempt to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.

Spies falling in love is nice drama, but something I could never really get on board. In order to get the the level where they let you be a spy, I would think that you would have to be a master of your own emotions. Falling in love is something a spy does after retirement. Until then every love is a liability or a target.

Charlize and Tom is a quality team up for a film like this however. The Theron is a talented, delicious actress that I enjoy seeing in anything, up to and including pants. Tommy has had trouble with his PR the past few years because of his insanity, but now he seems to be making the most of it and is quickly becoming the beloved crazy guy instead of the scary crazy guy.

Production on this film is slotted for March and we will be certain to fill you in on all of the updates and details.

Obama-2.jpg

Hey there guys. We love to talk movies. Movies are a great escape, but there are seriously more important things in the world. Tuesday is a defining moment in history. The results of this US election will have a huge impact on the direction the country, and the world will take over the next 4 years.

Both Doug Nagy and myself fully endorse Barack Obama. However, the important thing is that no matter who you support, Obama or McCain, you get yourself out to vote! The 2000 election in Florida taught us that EVERY SINGLE VOTE COUNTS!!!!! Don’t leave your candidate hanging. If you believe McCain is the right person for the job, then get off your lazy ass and get out to vote for him! If you think Obama is the best man for the job, then get off the damn internet porn sites for 30 minutes and get out to vote for him. Either way… VOTE TODAY!!!!!

Yma Sumac dies November First

Categories: News Chat | By Rodney |

A very talented soprano singer from Peru named Yma Sumac has passed away just this month.

Yes, I know you don’t have a clue who that is. I didn’t either. But her presence in a Charleton Heston film means that classic film buffs would.

Because I found it via my Friend DocMystery, I will let him say it better than I could:

I just learned that noted Peruvian soprano singer Yma Sumac, a woman whose voice spanned an incredible 4 octaves, died on November 1st.

Her voice was featured on many so-called “exotica” and “lounge music” albums, and I have one of her CDs in my car.

Here’s a snippet of her singing at the end of the never released for home video or DVD film “Secret of the Incas” (1954) starring Charles Heston, the film that many say suggested the ‘look and feel’ of Indiana Jones.

I leave you with her melodious song. Very haunting and beautiful.

Who knows if this film inspired the look of Indy, but that voice will haunt me.

John Daly Passes On

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

The well decorated producer John Daly is sadly no longer with us today. We get the sombre news today from the remembrance caves of Yahoo:

John Daly, the British-born producer of 13 Oscar-winning movies including “Platoon” and “The Last Emperor” who helped launch the careers of many A-list directors and actors, has died. He was 71. Daly, who was chairman of Film and Music Entertainment Inc., died Friday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after struggling with cancer, said his daughter, Jenny Daly.

Over a career that spanned four decades, Daly helped to produce films that earned 13 Oscars for Best Picture and 21 Oscar nominations, as well as numerous Golden Globes and other awards.

Mr. Daly has a library of work that stands as a testament to the ability and influence of his life’s toil as a producer.

We are in Johnny’s debt and our condolences go out to his friends and family.

Rest In Peace Johnny. You lived well.

Why Terrance Howard Was Dumped From Iron Man 2 - He Was Bad And Over Paid

Categories: News Chat | By John |

There has been a lot of discussion on the surprise news that Terrance Howard was dumped from Iron Man 2 and replaced by (the superior actor) Don Cheadle. Some hate the news, some (like myself) thought it was a shame, but happy to see Cheadle in the role. Well… according to Entertainment Weekly some new information is surfacing regarding WHY Howard was dumped.

Turns out it was for 2 reasons.

#1 - He was the highest paid actor on the movie
Yes, according to Entertainment Weekly, Terrance Howard was signed for MORE than Robert Downey Jr and everyone else on the movie. This isn’t too surprising because the studio wasn’t sure how the public would react to Downy at the time and Howard was, quite frankly, the bigger name. Still… a minor character getting more than the leads?

#2 - Howard was difficult on set and bad in the film
It’s being reported now that the studio, and director Jon Favreau himself did not like the performance Terrance Howard gave nor liked working with him that much. According to the story, Favreau spent a lot of time cutting and re-editing Howard’s scenes to make them work. It was so bad, that even though the original plan was to have a BIGGER role for Howard in the second film, Favreau had been working to make Howard’s role SMALLER. This was the final straw that made the studio pull the trigger and make the change change. If the director isn’t happy with the actor and he’s making him a smaller part but still be the highest paid??? You’d make the change too.

Anyway, my opinion of the situation is still pretty much the same. All other things being equal I would have liked to have seen Howard back as War Machine… but I’m even happier having Don Cheadle in the part now.

Halloween Reboot May Get Theatrically Released Sequel

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

I was surprised when I heard that Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake was going to be getting a sequel. I was more surprised when I heard he wasn’t going to be a part of it, and wasn’t surprised at all when I heard that the film would be direct to DVD. Now it appears that opinions have changed and the film will get a theatrical release. We get the following scoop from out friends at the Movieweb:

Despite Dimension Films announcing two weeks ago that Halloween 2 would be a Direct-to-DVD sequel, producer Malek Akkad said at this weekend’s Halloween: 30 Years of Terror convention in Pasadena that any and all sequels would first have a theatrical release. According to Bloody Disgusting, the next installment will be a direct follow-up to Rob Zombie’s 2007 Halloween remake.

Though it is not known if this next film will follow Michael Myers adventures in a hospital, as 1981’s original Halloween II did, it was reported that Tyler Mane, the man behind the mask in Zombie’s installment, would be returning as the omnipresent killer.

I think this would actually be better as a direct to DVD release.

I’m uncertain why they would switch directors up but still keep parts of Zombie’s vision for the character. With a new director on board wouldn’t a fresh remake be superior to a continuation of Zombie’s work (sans Zombie)?

Having two Halloween films is bad enough, now we’ll have two Halloween 2’s to choose from the rental shelf. Sequels to remakes is something that I cannot get behind. A remake is usually a no no in my books, but a sequel to a remake just seems like you are beating a dead horse into parts.

Tintin Gets Backing For Two Films

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

It looks like Spielberg and Jackson have obtained backing for two Tintin films. We get the following scoop thanks to our friends over at cinematical:

You might remember that at the end of September, word came that Steven Spielberg was having trouble financing his Tintin trilogy. Universal Studios had passed on the film, leaving Spielberg and co-director Peter Jackson without a major backer. According to Variety, they’ve found one. Sony and Paramount Studios are in talks to co-finance the franchise, with Sony handling the foreign release, and Paramount overseeing the domestic. DreamWorks will have no association with the film whatsoever.

The news that Tintin will still go ahead is good for fans — but as always, there’s a catch. Under the deal currently being negotiated, it looks as though there will only be two Tintin films. Considering that a director was never assigned, or a script written, this may have been decided long before the financing fell through.

I’m sure that if the first two Tintin films do well, we will see many more than a pair. A deuce of films may be perfect however. Spielberg and Jackson both wanted a shot at directing Tintin, maybe the set will be best if they each do one and leave it be.

I remember reading Tintin as a youngster. I would get random Tintin stories in grade 1 and 2 from the Bookmobile. The bookmobile was a small bus loaded with kick ass children’s books that would make the weekly rounds to all the schools in Welland county. I remember reading Tintin and lots of the Mr. Men books by Roger Hargraves.

Tintin is much better known internationally than he is in North America, but if a pair of quality films introduce a new generation to this character we may see a renewed interest in Tintin flame on round the globe.

Boondock Saints 2 Announced (again)

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

Well it appears after much back and forth that a Boondock Saints sequel may actually happen. We get the scoop from our friends at cinematical:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which reports on things from Hollywood, “principal photography has started in Toronto on Troy Duffy’s sequel to the 2000 indie.” Yes, Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery are coming back to reprise their roles. Also back on board are Billy Connolly and David Della Rocco. Other cast members will include Clifton Collins, Julie Benz, and Bob Marley.

Apparently Overnight the documentary that shows the making of the Boondock Saints is better than the film itself. Boondock was a great film that flew under the radar but slowly built up rep and success on word of mouth and recommendations from one buddy to another. My buddy Bill is the one who first told me about it.

Hopefully this announcement turns out to be true this time. Over the years we have heard that this is on again, off again, and now, with luck the project will stay on and give fans of the film the highly anticipated sequel.

International Friends, are you excited for a Boondock Saints sequel?

High Midnight

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

Pet Cemetery director Mary Lambert recently spilled her supple guts to MTV about a new vampire film in the works that’s set in the wild west. We get the scoop from out friends over at MTV:

Mary Lambert’s already got one vampire story airing on FEARnet — “The Dark Path Chronicles” — but the “Pet Semetary” director has another on the way for the big screen.

“High Midnight” is about what would happen if someone like Lucy from Bram Stoker’s Dracula escaped, came to America, went to the Wild West, and opened a ranch, Lambert told MTV News. The story would take place in the same time period, but right after the Civil War, and the town where the vamp finds herself in is run by a sheriff (to be played by William Baldwin) who is a drunk. He teams up with a vampire hunter (to be played by Thomas Kretschmann) to drive the vampire, Dallinserno, off the frontier.

If I had to cast someone for the role of drunk sheriff, there’s a good chance I would bring a Balwin on board. Billy Baldwin would top my personal list of drunk Baldwins, so I couldn’t be happier with their decision. Billy Baldwin has a face that says “I live to party”.

Wild West vampire films are a mash up that I can get behind. Guns, Saloons, Street Justice and the ever-living what more could you ask for in a movie?

I hope there is an uncomfortable sex scene between the drunk Baldwin and the Vampire queen. This would make the film the stuff of legend.

Billy Baldwin, Vampire romancer.

Bond Plunders Bounty From British Box Office

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

Champion Caves of Yahoo:

The new James Bond film, “Quantum of Solace,” debuted in Britain on Friday to record one-day ticket sales of 4.94 million pounds ($8 million), distributor Columbia Pictures said on Saturday.

The total tops “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” the previous record holder with an opening day haul of 4.025 million pounds ($6.5 million) in 2005, and it also beat the 2.9 million pounds ($4.72 million) first-day total for the last Bond flick, “Casino Royale” (2006), Columbia said.

I loved Casino Royale and hope this continuation keeps the quality that we saw in the initial outing. If this film ends up dropping the ball, I will be very disappointed.

I expect strong numbers from Bond On home turf, but this record setting is certainly well above that. Beating high lord Potter is no small task and with luck, the success of the film will be worthy of its quality. If any of our friends from the UK have seen this film - please fill us in on your thoughts.

Joaquin Phoenix Wasn’t Fibbing - He’s Out

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

It looks like Joaquin Phoenix is done with film, for real. We get confirmation on his decision to bail from film thanks to the yodel caves of yahoo:

The words “Good Bye” were penned on the actor’s knuckles at a premiere Saturday night for his latest film, “Two Lovers,” and Phoenix confirmed a surprise announcement he made last week: He’s giving up movies.

“I think it’s just moving on. It’s rediscovering something else,” said Phoenix, 34, said in an interview with Associated Press Television News before Saturday’s American Film Institute festival, which also premiered “Che,” starring Benicio Del Toro. “Two Lovers” is his last film, he said. His publicist had disclosed Friday that the actor intended to focus on music.

Good for him. The man has made his mark and has enough to retire, so I can’t blame him for wanting to jam it up. Rock and Roll is a seductive mistress and some chase her down with no money in the bank. Joaquin has the cash to chase his newfound love down without worry so who can call foul on his decision.

Fans of Phoenix will no doubt be sad to see him go, but we do have quite a number of films to remember by. For those that are interested in following his career cross genre you will soon have a new way to enjoy the man; through the sounds of song.

We wish the Phoenix well in his journey of song.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Wraps Principal Photography

Categories: News Chat | By Rodney |

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has been filming in various locations over the last few months and now all that has come to an end.

ComingSoon Reports:

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen director Michael Bay’s official website reports that principal photography for the sequel has wrapped.

Principal photography means “everything we planned to shoot”. This doesn’t mean that its all done, but most of it is and now the daunting task of editing, adding special effects and of course the Transformers themselves. If they need to, they can get the actors to come back and redo scenes, but the bulk of it is in the can - or hard drive as it appears to be now.

Right now if you were to steal what they have, you would get a mess of scenes in apparent random order with the stars talking to tennis balls on a stick.

But its the first hurdle, and now 10 times the effort in making the film will be MAKING the film.

My prediction right now is that the movie will be good, but expect in late June for the fans to be both excited to see Devastator (The combined Constructicon mega-bot) and royally pissed if the rumours are true and that his scene will be very brief.

I don’t know why they would bother to cater to the fans biggest request for the sequel, and then piss on it, but let’s just hope the rumours are not true!

Bruno Strikes At Proposition 8 Rally

Categories: News Chat | By Doug |

Bruno has been spotted again! This time the character has been caught at a Proposition 8 rally in California. We get the following scoop from the justice caves of Yahoo:

Sacha Baron Cohen went undercover as his alter ego Bruno on Sunday by crashing a rally in support of a ballot measure that would ban gay marriage in California.

The British comedian is working on a film based on the fictional character Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion reporter who conducted gag interviews on HBO’s “Da Ali G Show.”
Cohen, in disguise in a blond wig and preppy outfit, marched with demonstrators who support Proposition 8 while being trailed by cameras in a rally across from City Hall.
When photographers and reporters realized who he was and tried to approach the star, members of his film crew tried to shield him, and he was eventually whisked away in a van.

It is awesome that Bruno was at the rally. With luck they were able to get great crowd shots with him in the foreground. It seems like they are taking their time with this film racking up as many quality scenes as they can before hitting the editing room.

Borat was essentially a clip show with a loose story that managed to hold it all together. I am guessing they will do likewise with Bruno. With luck, this approach will work again. So far we already know about some cool scenes, The Governor, Gay Love Wrestlers, Crashing a Fashion Show and now a Rally thrown into the mix. If this is what we know about, I can’t wait to see what Cohen has been able to keep under wraps.

Heroes fires Alexander and Loeb

Categories: News Chat | By Rodney |

It would seem the general decline of excitement in Heroes has resulted in the writers/co-executive producers Jesse Alexander and Jeph Loeb getting the can!

ComingSoon reports:

The duo had been with the show since its first season and were known to have led the day-to-day production operation under the direction of creator/executive producer Tim Kring.

“Heroes,” produced by Universal Media Studios, has struggled in the ratings its third season. It’s understood that Alexander and Loeb were let go because of NBC executives’ frustration with the creative direction of the show.

I was a HUGE fan of Heroes back in its first season. I had to supply John with episodes like a pusher getting kids hooked on crack, and he too was on board.

This show was awesome. Little weak on its ending, but all the elements were there. I was glued to my screen every week watching this show.

Then the second season happened, and even when Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Patrelli) made an appearance on the live Uncut Show here on TMB, he admitted that the second season was a disappointment. No one is trying to gloss over that one.

But the third season had promise. A real shakeup in the storyline. But even with my drooling fanboy status, even I can’t say its been better. I just keep watching it HOPING it will get better.

I do like the speedster, because she is irresistably adorable and has replaced the hot and legal Hayden Panettiere for the eye candy quotient of the show, but some of the other characters I just don’t have any use for anymore.

Hiro has not grown. His character is stagnant and stale. I used to just love every second this guy was on screen because he was quirky, and funny and geekishly charming. But he is still that guy and hasn’t moved on at all. I just don’t have much use for him like this. I want to see him become the hardened katana toting soulpatch wearing warrior from the future but he just isnt. And I almost was happy when Ando was killed because I had no use for him either.

Parkman was getting interesting when we saw his powers were not limited to just glimpsing people’s thoughts, but even he isnt doing anything for me.

I liked when there was more mystery. I want that draw again, but right now it feels like they see the end is coming and are giving away too many answers just so we can see them fight with powers.

Maybe with new writers, the show will get new life. Maybe Alexander and Loeb gave us all they had in them for this series and it was time for new blood.

Maybe.
