The Reels at the Movies: Slot Machines Inspired by Blockbusters

Microgaming, the undisputed pioneer of the online gaming industry, has announced a deal with Universal Brand Development early this year. Under the deal, the company based in the Isle of Man will prepare and launch a video slot machine based on one of last year’s most successful movies, Jurassic World, at its partners. Things like this are not rare in the entertainment world – successful brands are crossing between branches of the industry, making their way into one another. For Microgaming, this is not the first such deal – it has released a Jurassic Park themed slot machine back in 2014, not long before Jurassic World was released. History, it seems, repeats itself.

Movies and online slots

Jurassic Park is not the only movie-based slot machine you can play at the Royal Vegas Canada, one of Microgaming’s flagship gaming outlets. Those interested to play free slot machines at Royal Vegas casino can choose from several of them: the Royal Vegas has slots inspired by movies like Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Bridesmaids, or TV shows like Battlestar Galactica and HBO’s smash hit Game of Thrones. The games are built to satisfy the needs both of the movies’ and the slot machines’ fans, with exciting side games, generous bonuses, and cross-platform availability.

The Royal Vegas is not the only online gaming destination with movie-based slots – and Microgaming is not the only developer closing such deals. Swedish developer NetEnt has released slots based on several classic Universal monster movies, like Creature from the Black Lagoon or The Invisible Man, and Australian developer NextGen Gaming has released a game based on Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic horror movie, Psycho, last year.

Vegas is no different

Movies and TV shows are attractive topics for the developers that serve the land-based gaming industry. Visitors to the casino floors of the Las Vegas Strip, or even Atlantic City, will stumble upon several games with familiar themes. Among them, you can find classics, like Grease or The Ghostbusters, more recent movies like The Hangover or Lord of the Rings, and even TV shows like Sex and the City, The Simpsons or Family Guy.

These games serve a dual purpose. On one hand, the familiar – and popular – themes are more attractive to players. This attraction is important for the games’ operators, who make a living off their gaming habit. On the other hand, the presence of various brands on the gaming floors keeps them alive inside the players’ minds, serving as a valuable marketing tool to promote sequels, prequels or even remakes.

The Jurassic World online slot machine will most likely be released before the end of this year – long before its sequel.
