It’s been a long time since we’ve heard a peep from that Elysium film that south African director Neil Blomkamp filmed between July and December of last year. The one we hoped would be released maybe this year but won’t really be released until like 2013? Yeah, I know it’s ringing some bells in your head but not very many because we didn’t really know what the film was about and the only released information involved the stellar cast of Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley. That ends today as some lucky internet person received the oficial synopsis for the film and was kind enough to share with the rest of us!
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
It’s an interesting premise and maintains the tone of District 9 and the idea of dealing with segregation but it is a little reminiscent of what was seen with the Justin Timberlake move ‘In Time’. It’s not a bad approach and I believe that Blomkamp intends to take a deeper approach and look at the effects of segregation further than that other film so I’m curious to see his work and what his final product will look like. Elysium is expected to hit theaters March 1st, 2013.
