The Man With the Iron Fists has made quite an impression with us around these parts. The movie is a Quentin Tarantino production and is directed by and starring his good friend and leader of the Wu Tang Clan, the man known as RZA. The story promises to be a visual love letter to the older Kung-Fu movies that inspired RZA in his youth and, visually, promises to be an eye gouging affair. Personally the movie feels like it wants to be the second coming of Kill Bill, (it even stars Lucy Liu), and I welcome that idea. So now that we’ve seen an image, poster, and trailer the only thing left is to discover when we can mark our calendars.
…the studio has announced that The Man With The Iron Fists will be released on November 2nd. The move puts the film on a hot date, as it will go head-to-head with two wide releases and a highly-anticipated limited release. Paramount previously announced that Robert Zemeckis’ Flight, starring Denzel Washington, will hit theaters that day and Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph will also be competition. Seven Psychopaths, Martin McDonagh’s follow-up to the much-loved In Bruges, will be in select theaters that weekend as will the horror filmThe ABCs of Death.
If we were talking about almost any other film that I was looking forward to later this year I would say that the other movies should be worried, but with this movie I think that’s a tough weekend. No disrespect to RZA but the reality is that he’s a first time director that doesnt have the full benefit of a household name. He’s also the star of the film and the rest of the cast, with Russell Crowe being an arguable exception, seems to be comprised of a team of talent passed their prime.
I wish them well with this date, but more importantly I hope that this movie is as fun as I hope it to be.
