The Amazing Spider-Man’s Lizard could have been better. Much much better.

Yesterday we took a look at some concept art for the Amazing Spider-Man and saw the alternatives for the costumer design of our favorite web slinger. Thankfully someone had sense enough to reject those. A few more concept art images have made their way online and show us the rejected designs for the Lizard and I can’t help but wonder “what happened?!”

As you’ll see below one of the early design was based on the look of actor Chris Cooper. The following Cooper lizard morphing images come from designer Aaron Sims. Makes me wonder if at one point they were actually looking to cast Copper in this role, which would have been amazing!

And a few designs from artist Jerad S. Marantz:

So yes, he very well could have looked a bit more reptilian and Lizard-Y and instead the folks behind the film went with the design below:

Let that sink in for a while…

  1. Lizard has been my favourite Spider-man villain (apart from Venom, Carnage, Green Goblin, Hob Goblin, Shocker, Doc Ock, etc.) since I was a kid, and it has always been exciting to see him in a movie. I had doubts on this remake all along, and after watching the movie, I found out it was with good reason too. If we turn to the Lizard character. The Lizards look (especially the head and legs) were really (apart from many other things in the movie) very disappointing. Though the Lizard in the movie was kind of good, I think they did a bad choice with which Lizard would actually be in the movie. It could have been much, much better. I also think it was too early for a remake. I would rather replace this remake with Raimis Spider-man 4, 5, and 6 and the Venom spin-off(s). The remake would not have come until after at least 20-25 years or so. It was a bad choice to shoot it now. However, it was a regular good movie with some good moments, nothing really significant (though it should have been), it was kind of simple (unfortunately), but still did a kind of nice job anyway, and Lizard will always be one of my most fascinating favourites! Peace!

  2. Wow!! The Chris Cooper Lizard looks amazing!! So much better than what they actually went with! And the mid-transformation images look so much better than just adding scales and green spots on Rhys like they did in the movie. Here his face is actually morphing. And he has a snout. This woulda been amazing!
