Michael Bay has responded to the fan uproar regarding the origin of the turtles in his upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. In case you haven’t heard the news, please refer to our earlier post here. The response was found on his official forum where he stated, “Fans need to take a breath, and chill.”
Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.

In my opinion, that’s not a way to respond to your audience. The fans are the ones that will be at the theaters opening weekend and if they like it, probably see the film more than once. For example, when Spider-Man first released, I saw it nine times in the theater. He could have just excluded those first two sentences and it would have been a more positive response to fans. The fact of the matter is that on top of discourteous response to the fans, he didn’t actually address their concerns. The story is not the issue, the issue is that the the name “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” does not apply when the turtles have an alien origin. I grew up on TMNT and the ooze is a pivotal part of the story that affects multiple characters in the TMNT universe.
Sorry Mr. Bay, I’m siding with the fans on this one.

Maybe it will end up being an alien mutagen that causes the mutation and not some man-made radioactive sludge that causes the mutation… That would make more sense to me then the cliche of some company dumping toxic waste someplace they shouldn’t and then mayhem ensues.
The ooze is alien in nature, not man-made. In the comics it came from a race of aliens that look like Krang, who operate under secrecy in the TCRI building and in the 80’s cartoon this ooze comes from Krang’s Dimension X. There’s tons of intergalactic travel and aliens and stuff in both the comics as well as the latter seasons of the 80’s cartoon. I think people are too hung up on the turtles New York adventures and their battles with Shredder, who in the comics was only around for a single issue before being killed.
I also think it’s pretty strange a decision for them to change the turtles from being made on Earth to coming from space, but it’s not really that big of a leap considering everything else that’s gone on in that universe.
The first TMNT is one of my favorite movies from when I was a kid, but I don’t think its such a bad idea to add some original material to make the story fresh. The explanation of four turtles mutating into human like creatures just by swimming in some strange ooz just isn’t good enough anymore. Its like having a modern day super hero gain his powers by being exposed to a radioactive explosion, its too dated for today’s audiences.
While I don’t necessarily agree with the idea of making them aliens, I completely understand his frustration. People were/are going to bitch about whatever he does with this film, or any film he is involved in. Hating on Michael Bay has become the “Cool” thing to do. I’m sure he is just sick of it. I don’t think this will have any effect on people coming to see the film, and certainly won’t make people think any worse of the film. People already seem to have their minds made up before they ever see a film that he’s involved with that its completely horrible. I thought he was too nice.
It’s not Bay personally. It could have been any director. Screwing with nostalgic memories draws emotion. I’m confident he’ll try to retain the core aspects but the knee jerk reaction is that he’s changing too much.
Furthermore Bay is a master manipulator. What other reason to publicly announce plans to change the origin other than to get a reaction? He knows the audience so he knows what he’s doing.
I think to a degree he is responsible for hating Bay being ‘Cool’, seriously why mention this at all, why not keep it a secret. They knew this was going to set the TMNT fans into a frenzy, cant be anything but a marketing ploy.
Growing up I think TMNT were the last toys I played with before toys became something of the past. While I think such a radical change is moronic (its in the name after all) maybe its time to take a step back and just break it down.

As for him being too nice… I guess, the man makes movies that pull in truck loads of cash, he should have said “I’m Michael Bay Bitch”.
I agree with you guys about this being a publicity stunt. My only thing is though, with his critics, its pretty much gotten to a “Boy who cried wolf” type thing. They have complained about so many ridiculous trivial things in the past, that when they finally have a legitimate beef with something, all I think is “yeah, yeah, I know, everyone hates Michael Bay movies, what else is new”. It’s just the same thing over and over again. Plus, I was fine with the origin story, but when you say it out loud it really does sound stupid.
