Earlier today George Clooney was arrested, now this is definitely not something you hear every day. Lindsay Lohan sure (that is her job now right?) But Clooney now there is a real celebrity the leading man personified.

George Clooney was arrested alongside his father and members of Congress on Friday for protesting — and crossing police lines — at the Sudan’s embassy in Washington, D.C., and photos of him being taken away in zip cuffs and placed into a Secret Service van quickly transmitted all over the world. As soon as the news broke, the internet does what it does best: activism through hashtags.
Immediately, a trending topic was born: #FreeClooney. Of course, some of the tweets were funny — Empire Magazine posted a “mug shot” of the star holding a coffee mug — but many Twitter activists praised him for standing up for his beliefs.

Clooney was later released after paying a $100 fine but #FreeClooney continues on and remains entertaining.
While we normally shy away from content that is more celebrity oriented and stay within the bounds of what we consider relevant to movies we are any other day of the week far from your number one destination for ‘celeb news’. But for Clooney exceptions are made.

Hell, if Clooney crossed a police line, he had to be arrested. People get arrested all the time but what if…come on that’s it!
What if Clooney wanted more publicity for his Sudan cause? Getting himself arrested would definitely be one way to draw the support of his fans. So far I guess his ruse has been succesful.
His politics and even the reason for his arrest was less interesting to me than the #freeclooney trend. It’s one of the few times Twitter is ‘fun’.

Clooney is a liberal and like most liberals talk is considered more important than action. Thats probably why they never shut up. Obama has babbled something about Darfur, so that is almost as good as Obama parachuting in with a Tommy Gun himself.
