Whitney Houston returns to film

Whitney Houston is mounting, (another), comeback to the mainstream world in a big way and one of her upcoming projects will be a role in a remake of a 1976 film “Sparkle” which is based on a real-life tale of Diana Ross and the Supremes.

Whitney Houston is set to return to the big screen for the first time in 15 years for Sparkle, a remake of the 1976 drama based on the real-life tale of Diana Ross and The Supremes (yes, kind of like Dreamgirls, only Sparkle came first). The story follows the rise and fall of fictional girl group Sister & the Sisters, the members of which find their personal lives falling apart even as their act reaches ever higher levels of fame and success.
Houston, who’s also set to executive produce, will play the “not-so-encouraging” mother of the girls in the band. Houston has actually been attached to the project since back when it was supposed to star Aaliyah, who passed away in 2001. Also in the cast are Jordin Sparks making her cinematic debut in the title role, and Mike Epps in the part of destructive comedian Satin.Salim Akil (Jumping the Broom) is set to direct the feature from a script by his wife Mara Brock Akil.

I have a soft spot for Whitney Houston, (that’s what she said!), and I will openly watch any film that is graced with her presence. Sure, she’s had a lot of drama in her life in recent years but I would be hard pressed to find any celebrity who hasn’t. I loved her in every film, all three of them, that I’ve watched her in and look forward to her cinematic return. Yes, I’m being overtly positive because this woman needs all the positivity that she can muster.

In addition to Houston, I’m curious about the inclusion of Mike Epps in the film. I think he’s usually a welcome addition to a film by appreciably adding his comedic skill to most of his performances. All in all it’s shaping to be an interesting look at the life of Diana Ross and I’ll keep an eye on more information until its eventual release.
