Transformers MMO in 2012?

Now we all know that as an unproven but undisputable (not real) rule, movies based on video games suck. And video games based on movies tend to suck too.

But what happens when you get a tv show based on a toy that becomes a movie that becomes a game based on the toy crossed with the realism and styling of the movie and the graphic comics that already has video games that becomes a Massively Multiuser Online Game?

Cinemablend says:

“TRANSFORMERS is one of the most iconic brands in the world and we are delighted to team up with Hasbro in order to bring our shared vision to reality,” … “There is a huge appetite for an online TRANSFORMERS game and we will utilize every bit of our development and publishing expertise to deliver a dynamic and action-packed game that TRANSFORMERS fans will find irresistible.”

I really enjoyed War for Cybertron, and if they keep it to that style and the deathmatch PvP, I could really see a Cybertron based Transformers MMO really taking off.

The true test will be character customization. War for Cybertron’s only drawback was that you got to play a number of archetypes, but not get to embody any of the personalities.

I want to make my own Transformer dammit.

Ok, he will look like HotRod.

  1. I both applaud and question the decision to go MMO. Once you get past W.O.W. has any MMO really been very successful? I’m really not an MMO guy, but it seems as though most have crashed and burned. DC universe was supposed to be the “next big thing” and friends tell me it’s a crap fest. I think they should make a single player game with multiplayer options. Maybe some of you that or more experienced in the MMO world can enlighten me, but I just don’t see it working. Sounds like a great idea, but most of them do until they actually come out.

    1. There are other successful MMO’s. Have any been as successful as Wow? No, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t successful. Just take a look at MMORPG.com to see how many have been around for a long time now.

What the MMO world is waiting for is something with the potential to be a big hitter. The first will be The Old Republic. It will put a dent in Wow’s fan base, barely. Transformer, if executed properly, could do more than that.

What I fear is something like City of Heroes or Champions Online. Both are great games with character customization that is unreal, but the mission and quest lines are just to corney and the content gets repetitive. The fighting styles leave a lot to be desired. Wow succeeds because it’s immersive. It succeeds with that despite the fact that it has almost no customization.

Transformers will have to have customization, but it won’t succeed if it’s mission structure is like CoH. The reason I think Old Republic will succeed as well is because Bioware is the best RPG maker there has ever been. They will draw the players into the story and the universe.

  2. There is a lot a good games based on movies. Goldeneye and a lot of the Star Wars games come to to mind..especially the X-Wing and Tie Fighter ones.

  3. I agree that character customization will be a key factor here. If everyone in the game transforms like the same dozen cars & trucks then the feeling of individuality is right out the window.
Also, good gameplay and an interesting story would help too.

    1. Me too, excellent web slinging physics and a feeling of speed similar to the old sonic games.

War for Cybertron looked great as it blended the movies angular designs with a more classic, blocky shaped character. Customization has brilliant possibilities
