Paul WS Anderson Will Destroy Pompeii

So, what’s next for Paul WS Anderson after his Musketeers flick? He wants Mount Vesivous to erupt and bury ancient Pompeii, that’s what… Variety reports:

Anderson will direct and produce with Impact Pictures’ Jeremy Bolt and Constantin’s Robert Kulzer. German-based Constantin will finance and produce “Pompeii” while Summit will distribute domestically and start selling foreign markets at Cannes.

“Pompeii,” scripted by Lee Batchler and Janet Scott Batchler, will center around the romance between a slave and the daughter of the slave’s master amid the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 and destruction of Pompeii. No actors have been cast and no start date’s been set.

Roman Polanski wanted to do a Pompeii film about four years ago, but due many factors that plug was pulled. While it isn’t said if the script is the same one or something related to that dead project, Constantin was one of the investors in Polanski’s planned film.

Polanski (regardless of what we think of his past) and Anderson could not be more polar opposites when it comes to directing style. It might be interesting to see how Anderson handles this kind of film without it being based on a videogame or having a song by TOMANDANDY. You might think I’m joking about that, but with his Resident Evil team coming with him, you got to wonder…I mean, okay, it might not be that bad. It would be a challenging project for the AvP director. Who knows- maybe after his Three Musketeers film he’s looking for a little prestige…

Anyone interested in a volcano film? At least we’ll get that and a little sword and sandals…

  1. I’d love to have another volcano film, I’m excited about this one, because Pompeii really happened. BUT why the hell do they need to include a love story?! Is it that difficult to make a captivating movie without swooning and snogging..geez. It’s Titanic all over again.

      1. Not saying that it isn’t smart to emulate one of the most successful movies in history. Would you agree that since Titanic the love story/disaster movie has been somewhat overdone and for the most part done poorly? Cameron spent a great deal of the movie developing Jack and Rose’s relationship. What we usually see now is guy and girl are introduced at the beginning of the movie, they’re either together when the disaster strikes or have been separate prior to the disaster, guy spends the rest of the movie either trying to keep himself and girl alive or fight his way to her.

I believe part of Titanic’s success can be attributed to it being unique and different from the disaster movies we’d seen prior to its release. Titanic was a love story set within a disaster movie. What’s come out since, have mostly been disaster movies with a love story tacked on in an attempt capture the female audience. The idea has been similar, but the execution has fallen far short.

  2. It’s been about 15 years since Volcano movies were in vouge. We had Volcano and Dante’s Peak, Then we got astroid movies, flood movies so I guess it’s time for volcano movies again. Historical volcano movies no less. At the very least, I’m sure the special effects will be cool.
