Evil Dead has a director!

I never thought this day would come. I put this movie next to “Duke Nukem Forever”, “Titanic 2”, and a long list of other projects that would “never ever see the light of day, but would be nice to have”. Didn’t turn out so true with Duke Nukem Forever, and it seems like I may also have to eat my words about the Evil Dead remake. It seems to be happening and it has a director!

First announced in 2004, a remake of Sam Raimi’s debut picture has long been in the cards and according to Bloody Disgusting it is now moving forward with casting under way in Detroit. Raimi is on board to produce via his Ghost House Pictures label with Mandate backing the project. Uruguayan director Federico Alvarez – who initially attracted Raimi’s attention with the fantastic micro-budget scifi short Panic Attack! – will direct. If casting is underway now it shouldn’t be long before cameras role and the first images begin to trickle out.

This is pretty exciting news for everyone waiting for this movie to actually exist. I for one am looking forward to the movie and hope that it is able to give us some of that charm that has made the original a cult classic. As far as the director… no idea. The guy has only a handful of short films on his resume and he’s taking over Evil Dead now. Who knows, Raimi is producing the movie and certainly has a say in who takes the job so I’m gonna give the guy the benefit of the doubt. This Alvarez guy could be the next Neil Blomkamp for all I know.

  1. Never saw the attraction of Evil Dead (got baked and watched it ,was a bit of fun the 1st time out but nothing special IMO)…..and I lived and breathed Horror flicks back in the 80’s..

I say if they can Re-make and F-up (IMO) John Carpenters beloved Halloween then this is fair game.

  2. Are they going to replace Bruce Campbell or have him reprise the role? More importantly, WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS? Are they going to remake the Rocky Horror Picture Show while they’re at it?
