Batman Year One cast announced

Batman Year One. Just those words can evoke all types of emotions from a true fan of either Frank Miller or Batman. There’s a lot of interest in exploring the latter years of Batman’s career in animated form that it’s easy to overlook how things are developing regarding Batman’s first year.

Heat Vision reports that Bryan Cranston, Ben McKenzie, Eliza Dushku and Katee Sackhoff will provide their voices for Batman: Year One, the animated adaptation of the Frank Miller classic from Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation. Lauren Montgomery and Sam Liu are directing from a script by Tab Murphy…
…Cranston is playing Gordon, while McKenzie is Wayne/Batman. Dushku voices Catwoman, while Sackhoff is Detective Sarah Essen, a Gordon love interest. Additionally, Alex Rocco lends his pipes as crime lord Carmine Falcone.

I don’t dislike this cast, but I’m openly biased to Kevin Conroy’s portrayal of the Dark Knight. I appreciated his and Tim Daly’s return in Superman/Batman Apocalypse and hoped it was a sign that they may return as the recurring voices for these character. Oh well.

I really can’t get a good feeling or make a good judgement of the art style for this flick from these screen shots. What I really want to see is how David Mazzucchelli’s art translates into animation. I was really impressed with how they preserved the late great Michael Turner’s art style with Batman/Superman and hope to be equally impressed with this flick.

  1. Batman under the red hood is AMAZING and is right up there with Batman Begins and the Dark Knight ITS THAT GOOD! DC universe has been knocking out of the park and this might be the best yet!! Love that they are focusing on the Gordon storyline and Bryan Cranston! PERFECT!!

  2. I’m overtly biased to Kevin Conroy (Batman) , Tim Daly(Superman) and Mark Hamill(Joker) . These guys are the big guns in the voice work department. They make these characters iconic.

  3. I wonder if any following Joker incarnations will look/sound/feel more like Ledger’s portrayal…

Im like Hammill’s Joker fine, but its a characature of a cartoon at this point, the Under the Red Hood version was better, I think if you adjusted the look for that version, it would be perfect.

Interested to see how this one turns out.

    1. Nicholson’s Joker was very unlike the hokey 60s Cesar Romero Joker, and Ledger was nothing like either of the two.

They could be a little of all of them or none at all. Joker seems to be the one character that is allowed to be 12 different kinds of Crazy and we love them all.

  4. Bruce Greenwood did a great job w/ Batman’s voice in Under Red Hood. I’m not biased on Kevin Conroy at all. But I would be curious if they gave Mark Hamhill a call for an old Joker. Okay—now I’m bias!

  5. Nolan’s Batman series not withstanding, it seems as though Marvel is poised to win the live action movie battle, but DC stomps them in the animation department.
