Top Gun also being re-released in 3D

Top Gun is a classic movie that inspired a generation of films while propelling the career of a young Tom Cruise and today we learn that the film is returning to theaters for a 3D converted re-release:

Director Tony Scott’s classic 1986 Tom Cruise film Top Gun is set to get a 3D conversion for a theatrical re-released in early 2012…

The 3D conversion is being done by Legend3D and the CEO Rob Hummel had this to say during the panel, We think there is great potential for catalog titles in 3D, but studios have had trouble justifying the expense.

I’m not a fan of 3D conversion and I have 2 words for the companies involved with post-conversions: “Keep Trying”. Again, I’m not a fan of some of the results but I highly encourage that those who have the ability to keep practicing and perfecting their craft. I think a lot of movies can appreciably benefit by adding a 3rd dimension for theater patrons and would like to see the process perfected. I admittedly think that the idea probably lends itself better to animated films but will try to remain optimistic for those who continue the current trend. Currently I’m excited about the re-release of the Lion King even though I can’t completely imagine how the film will appreciate with the conversion I still think it’s a highly enjoyable film and am anxious about sharing the experiences with my children.

More importantly I want to see what Jim Cameron will be able to produce with his re-release of his groundbreaking film Titanic. Hopefully once perfects the practices he will undoubtedly develop during the process he will be able to loan these ideas to other studios and continue the maturation of the process.

Top Gun wouldn’t be my first pick, or second for that matter, for the conversion process but I wish them welcome the attempt and which those involved the best during the process. C’mon guys, show me a masterpiece!

  1. Can someone please explain to me the secret genius behind rereleasing movies in 3d? or releasing any movies in 3d for that matter. The only time 3d was ever cool was in middle school when you finally got to go to the local planetarium to see the laser light show!

  2. I don’t like the thought of them trying to turn “Top Gun” or any old movie into a 3D version it just doesn’t feel right. It’s in a way like when they use to try and colourize old b&w movies it didn’t work and the original version was always better. Maybe Cameron will show that it can be done with exceptional results with Titanic but can the cost both in time and money really be justified.

  3. I hate 3D! I’d rather just rent/buy the blu ray when it comes out and watch it on my TV at home…at this point 3D is a gimmick that charges more money, a dimmer picture, and a headache! No thanks.

  4. I actually paid good money to see Top Gun in the theater 8 times. I think it will be fun to see it this go around with my daughter. It will be like reliving my 20’s all over again, course I actually did that a couple weekends ago, but I digress…even if it is lackluster, I’ll be going.
