Star Trek 2 to film this winter

Surprisingly it seems that director J.J. Abrams is only now officially committing to directing the next entry in the Star Trek film franchise and plans to begin filming this summer.

Insiders who know Abrams’ plans also told Vulture that pre-production on the film has begun with the script expected by the end of September. Abrams would then step behind the camera this winter.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of 2009’s STAR TREK, are currently finishing up the script with LOST’s Damon Lindelof.

Paramount has long had a June 2012 release date planned for STAR TREK 2, but now a December 2012 release seems more likely.

I’m a little confused because I was under the impression that Abrams had already been previously confirmed, but I won’t be the one to complain about good news. Thankfully Abrams didn’t reconsider leaving the franchise as he seemed to recenlty be inspired by Steve Spielberg to focus instead on original projects that he creates.

I loved the 2009’s Star Trek Movie and I’m definitely looking forward to finding out what it is that he has in mind for Kirk and Co’s next foray as they boldly go where no man has gone before.

  1. As someone who isn’t familiar with the original series, I thought that the 2009 reboot was excellent. I didn’t feel lost, and the story was entertaining. I’m actually surprised that it’s taken so long for an announcement for a follow-up. But maybe that’s for the best. Hopefully the writers and producers take their time and draw up an interesting sequel.
