Forget Prometheus – What We Want is Alien 5. (At Least Sigourney Weaver Does Anyway)

Sigourney Weaver doesn’t feel her Ripley days in the Alien franchise should be over. She would love to do a fifth film – and soon before she loses her good looks.

Total Film gives us:

“I could definitely kick that alien’s ass again,” Weaver says. “While I can’t speak for them, I think for [20th Century] Fox, once you’re 60, you’re not going to be starring in an action movie.

“I think it’s too bad that that’s the case. I would have liked to do one last story where we go back to the planet, where Ripley’s history is resolved. But I do feel like her story is unfinished.”

There are two things that jump out at me like a facehugger. (Aww c’mon y’all knew I was gonna work that in…) First, the 60 year old bit. I don’t buy that excuse. Nope. True, I’m not a Fox exec (although I should be!) but last year, people still turned out to see Sylvester Stallone lead a team of Expendables. Harrison Ford reprised Indiana Jones a few years ago. So if by some miracle Fox greenlights Alien 5 for whatever reason (money?) I would have zero problems if Weaver returned. Hey, Ford has Jones. Sly has Rambo and now The Expendables. Why not give Weaver another chance at Ripley?

Second, Weaver is right. There is the curiousity of the cloned Alien-human Ripley coming to Earth. (Technically speaking, it isn’t the “Ripley” from the first three films; the character’s story is done. This is a NEW character in a likeness shell). While ‘Alien Ressurection’ had its effective surreal moments, it would have been better if they junked out Joss Whedon’s scripted one liners. No, I take that back. It would have been better if Fox never, ever gave us the AvP movies.
That was far worse a fate.

While I don’t know how well Ridley Scott’s Prothemus will do (set in the same Alien universe, at least for now) the mere talk of a direct Alien follow up makes me smile. (I wouldn’t mind a Copycat II by the way. I know I’ll never get it)

What do the int’l friends say? Alien 5 – with or without Weaver?
Remember: she’ll reprise the role of an alien-human Ripley clone if given the chance!

  1. Eu só gostaria de saber como seria se ao envez de Alien 5, Ripley mostrasse seu rosto em um Alien vs Predador 3. Na minha opinião seria muito bom ver Ripley em um filme AVP.

  2. Make alien 5, clone some of the aliens marines (hicks, hudson, drake, vasquez) of which the DNA samples still were intact at the sulaco after the fire broke out.  and fight the damn alien war on earth
I don’t care if they even clone some of those prisoneres and some of the first alien movie people to fight the war.

  3. Gotta say I agree with Sigourney here. I love Ripley, even the cloned Ripley. Sure she’s not the same, but that’s what made her interesting in the 4th. I say, make # 5 as a proper end to Ripley’s story. But, please, NO JOSS WHEDON!

    1. The original early-90s Dark Horse comic series for Aliens vs. Predator was very good. They were set on a terra-formed planet many years after the events in Aliens. There were space marines too.

I will never understood why they ditched the comics and went for the shitty modern-age screenplays. Oh wait, yes I do understand why: money.

      1. And if they set AvP in the future the setting would be after Alien Ressurection, and might not have adapted the AvP comics to fit the film timeline if they did. The AvP comics contradicted each other and the films, including Aliens. The AvP comics are regarded as non-canon.

But I also agree that Fox screwed the poochie.

  4. I think they should have Ripley wake up from a dream, where the events in Alien 3 never happend, shes now 60 living comfortable on earth. this way they can work in newt, and hicks. And have the alien infestation head to earth.

    1. I would be happy with that. I would be happy with anything that brings Weaver back for another Alien film. As for the clone issue, she’s still Ripley. If the film was done well, I think we all could get past the clone issue a few minutes after seeing Weaver on screen. She’s an incredible actress–don’t underestimate her–and I don’t give a damn about her age. The problem is finding a screenplay and a director worthy of the project.

  5. At this point it seems we (audience/filmakers) keep trying to rekindle the flame of the Original and Camerons version with more stories, at this point, the previous poster is right….RIP already, part 3 killed her for good (Hated that prison flick) and part 4 was a forgettable affair. Prequel is fine by me, But part 5 gets the blood flowing for the fans of the saga but after much thought it should probally fade away..We still can re-watch the Awesomeness of the 1st 2 films…

    time to let go…
and I dont see them making TDK/Harrypotter money anytime soon and never did anyways…..so why push?

  6. As much I love Ripley, she died in Alien3, the Resurrection Ripley is not the same person, just memories and looks.

I’d rather see Prometheus as a new start, reboot prequel, acknowledge the reports of what has happened with Ripley, maybe video records for cameo appearance

    RIP Ripley

  7. Here’s a better idea.

Let David Fincher remake Alien 3 the way he intended (but force him to write in Newt and Hicks, because it’s total b.s. the way they killed them off between movies). Then we all collectively forget that the original Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection ever happened.

    Sound good?

  8. I’m in no need of a sequel to Resurrection. Weaver wouldn’t be playing Ripley, as the fans fell in love with her. As you mentioned, she’s be playing a clone. It simply isn’t the same character. The timeline has skipped forward so many times, there no way they could produce an effective universe, besides the colonies and alien worlds. And honestly, I think they’ve run out of creative ways to incorporate the ol’ Xenomorphs.
My Ripley died in Alien3 (which I really enjoyed because of her character development). A prequel is silly enough. I don’t need another sequel.
