Kenneth Branagh will NOT direct Thor 2

Thor 2 is coming. Was there ever any doubt? The 1st movie has made mucho moola internationally and it hasn’t even been released on DVD yet. No, no that was probably only our first taste in what will assuredly last for many years to come. What won’t happen is Kenneth Branagh returning in the directors chair for the next entry in the Thor franchise.

Marvel Studios, which is in production on the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers, is making a full commitment to Thor 2, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the title hero. Marvel will need to hire a director for that film because, I’ve learned, Kenneth Branagh won’t be returning as helmer.

At least they shared when we will next see our favorite Asgardian on the silver screen.

UPDATE: Disney has set a July 26, 2013 release date for Thor 2.

No Ken Bran? And here I thought that dude did a great job directing Thor! It wasn’t a perfect movie by any means, but what comic movie is? I think it’s a bit disappointing to hear about his departure but I’m also very excited about the idea of a another director getting his hands on this property. But I think I’m gonna take my time and think long and hard before I decide who I’d like to see take on the job. Thor’s not an easy sell.

Also, Marvel wants to continue this trend of multiple Marvel Studios releases per year. That may not be a problem for me, but I wonder if they may be a teetering a bit on the line of “over saturation” for the mainstream audience. I think they will do well to continue with these near summer/summer release schedule just to play things safe, how about you?

  1. I’m glad they will go ahead with Thor 2…I’m Norwegian and got a kick out of the first one. I do hope they improve a couple things: First, casting…I think they nailed it with Thor, his brother, and of course Anthony Hopkins, but although I am a fan of Natalie Portman, I felt there was zero chemistry between she and Thor—I have no idea why, but there was no connection. Screenplay: Some of it worked well, but man, please lose the cheesy “this film is so current and in touch with 15-20 year olds” lines that distract from the plot…that young girl character Darcy was incredibly annoying…every line she had was so trying to hard to be trendy—one more facebook, ipod, ” I know…right?”, etc reference would have made me lose my lunch. OK, enough judging for now, go THOR!

    1. Vaughn still needs more growth IMO, sure 1st class was a solid film but mainly due to the stellar performances from both lead actors.
take those dudes out of the picture and recast them and I’ll bet he’d be gutted Red Dragon style from the diehards.

      just sayin.

      1. I think the whole film was so beautifully shot, so well written… and you had to have a director to get those performances out of the two leads… that I find it impossible not to think of Vaughn as anything but spectacular for these sorts of movies. Add this to the fact that he did Kick-Ass, which was pretty freaking awesome on all accounts, and I don’t see how anyone could find him wanting.

  2. I am all about a new director. Not that I didn’t like the job he did (loved thor). It is that I think of these movies like the comics themselves, a different writers take on the character and a different director to tell the tale. The marvel exects will worry about keeping up with the movie cannon but I welcome a different interpretation on the character. Different view points will allow the character to grow just like with the comics.

  3. Hopkins to me FINALLY didn’t give us the mega-ham after a couple of stinkers, so I liked him, as for the director….yeah a bit of a bummer but after IM2I can understand(if it was Marvel at all) I think they jumped the gun on this one..

    If It’s Branagh’s choice then…

    That’s that

  4. THe only thing I disliked about Thor was Anthony Hopkins as Odin. Sorry, I love the man as an exceptional actor but I just didnt see him as Odin.

I am also past the casting of an Ethnic actor as an Asgardian, didnt detract fron the film in the least.

    1. I thought he was fantastic as Odin, as well as such a small part could be played, and giving it a lot of stature for that small part. There are plenty of things to nitpick about Thor, but I didn’t think that was one of them.
