Riddick 3 Promises an R rating, So Diesel says

Writer director David Twohy and actor Vin Diesel promise that the next Riddick film will be like the first film- an R rated action romp.
Crave Onlinegives us:

Updating their fans on Vin Diesel’s Facebook page with a recent video post, Diesel answered some questions along with Twohy (who also wrote The Fugitive, and wrote and directed The Arrival and The Perfect Getaway) about how hardcore the film will be, particularly in comparison to the lackluster PG-13 sequel The Chronicles of Riddick,

I actually didn’t think Chronicles was a bad film, and I don’t quite understand the reasoning that an R rating would have helped that film (or help the next planned one) Was it a step down from Pitch Black? Maybe just a tad. I liked Alexa Davalos in Chronicles, thought Nick Chinlund was entertaining in an over the top way. and hey, the Kill You With The Tea Cup line is gold. The main difference between the two films is Pitch Black was serious fun and the other silly fun with great production design. The creature FX however, was a step down.

It seems they are closer to doing this, and I would not mind a third film, R rated or not. I think if Universal can convince Vin for doing more Fast films, they can sign him up for another go-round as Riddick, But Vin also needs other pictures sometime.

Anyone wanting this?

  1. I liked Pitch Black better, Part 2 was another chapter in left field, and although that was definitly refreshing. it fell short of good IMO. it felt like somewhat an even more boring version of Dune with sprinkles of Flash Gordon (costumes) inbetween. Had some cool moments but not enough to keep me interested.

and Pitch Black started out looking like a cheap version of Battlefield Earth (if thats even possible!) but readjusted itself around the 1/2 hour point, and delivered a nice little B-movie sci-fi fun fest.
and you gotta love the shades too man.

  2. I loved both of them. They were both very good in their seperate genres. Vin was great in both.

While I don’t mind a good rated R movie, I fell in love with the Riddick Universe not just whether it’s bloody or not.

What I will be upset with is if they ignore the 2nd movie. That was a pretty epic tale that ended with so many questions, most notably, what will he do as the necromancer leader. Other areas, like the underverse, are still unexplained.

So, hopefully they have a good way to segue from the ending of the 2nd to their next movie.

I can say this, going from Aliens (big blockbuster action fest) to Alien 3 (Rated R corridor horror) was one of the biggest let downs for me (second only to the SW Prequels). I don’t really want to see Riddick 3 do that.

  3. Full Metal pretty much nailed it. I think most people love the idea of Riddick it is just there is a big difference between the two. One is like a small band of people surviving alien hordes and the other is about religion and power. Like 2 different plots for 2 different stories that could intertwine but they went to the next level. It is never easy to cram 5 hours of story into an hour and a half.

You can tell by comments. There is a definite 2 types of fans for the movies.

  4. I am excited! I loved the CofR movie. PB was OK but just moved too damn slow for me taste in the beginning! It took me a couple times before I actually sat down and watched it completely…I know they had to develop the character and all but I just was’t interested in it. Then CofR came out and that movie was awesome! I hope they continue to build on that movie. It has a great possibility for expansion!

  5. Not really. Pitch Black was mediocre at best and Chronicles of Riddick was just awful. The only thing I’ve liked about the Riddick franchise is the Escape from Butcher Bay game. They need to make that into a movie.

  6. Ehh I’m glad to hear they’re going back to the style of the first one, the second one bugged me. I liked Pitch Black because it was like a survival horror sort of movie, with really not a whole lot of backstory. Then Chronicles of Riddick was like this sweeping sci-fi epic with a much larger scale than the first film.

I also felt like the tone and atmosphere were very inconsistent with the first one. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Pitch Black but I remember it being pretty hard sci-fi. Nothing really supernatural or anything. Then in Chronicles you get Judy Dench as that elemental or whatever, and weird almost magic kind of stuff that seemed really out of place. It was pretty much a different universe.

So if the universe is more like the one in Pitch Black, I’d be down for a third. If it’s another Chronicles though I’ll probably pass.

    1. I agree completely! While I grew to like Chronicles because of Riddick’s character, it just didn’t match with what had come before. Pitch Black was a gritty sci fi horror yarn that seemed to be based in the not so distant future. It reminded me of the original Alien in some ways. There was no mention of this crazy sci fi fantasy world that popped up in the second movie. While Chronicles is not a bad movie it just added all this useless mythos to the character that wasn’t needed. I didn’t like the production design either, I thought it was cheesy.

    2. I loved the distinctly different feel of the two movies. It wasn’t Pitch Black and Pitch Black 2. We got to see one world in the universe and one setting for the movie Pitch Black. Why not expand upon that and show was different parts of the universe are like. It was kind of a refreshing and original concept of taking a sequel into a whole knew direction, rather than trying to rehash the original plot into the same ol’ thing only “bigger and better”. I enjoyed them both quite a lot.

As far as Dench being some magical being… I didn’t see that concept at all. I saw her just as something alien, but I guess something that is not obvious earthly probably would seem alien; despite her looking human when not all elemental.

To each their own, though. :)

  7. i freakn love the character and love the lore. i hope they do him justice in the 3rd one.

Also, i liked Babylon A.D. as well, i kind of wish they expanded that world a bit more in the movie. Maybe they could crank out a sequel with that, and make it more action packed since now he has a wicked cool robot arm.
