Kevin Smith to Stop Directing

At the Sundance premiere of his new film, “Red State,” Kevin Smith announced he would no longer be directing films. This following his strange performance leading up to the film’s premiere in which he first wanted fans to fund the film through donations, then refused to do any press or trailers for the film and then faking an auction to sell distribution rights at the Sundance festival so that he could announce he was buying the distribution rights himself for $20. He now intends to travel the country with the movie, self-releasing it as he tours and offering discounted rates to theatre owners to show the film in a limited number of theatres.

WorstPreviews reports:

Smith ended the event by stating that he plans to direct “Hit Somebody” with mostly the same cast as “Red State” and then quit directing forever. He’ll instead focus on producing and distribution.

Has Smith gone Randy Quaid on all of us?

Or is he bucking a system that really needs bucking?

  1. weird. i can understand not wanting to direct, as it’s quite a demanding job, but i would have thought he’d at least keep on writing. guess time will tell if he ends up changing his mind about a thing or two.

  2. I think the randy quid comparison is a bit unfair: during his smodcast podcasts he’s been saying how he’s been working pretty much none stop since clerks: spending a year writing and then directing, and then repeating the processes. Plus i think he’s just gotten sick of the whole industry: he just seems to have more fun with his podcast network and other projects.

That said, i doubt he’s really “retiring”: i mean he’s even expressed interest in potentially doing a third Clerks sequel, plus, he often backtracks, after Jay and Silent Bob he announced we’d never see another “viewaskew” movie….

    1. Just to clarify: i meant to say that as a result of the spending a year writing and then directing cycle, he’s just gotten tired, and needs some time off.

  3. FINALLY!! His directorial output has that of diminishing returns ever since Mallrats – I just don’t know how else to put it: Kevin Smith’s films are terrible! What’s his appeal?

  4. Makes sense, I’m sure he makes more money back on advertising for various companies, his podcast and his public speakings. Plus, I’m sure if Red State and Hit Somebody are hits with audiences and critics, he’d like to go out with a bang. Sucks though, would of liked to see what he would of done with Clerks 3.
