Warner Bros. Seriously Considering John Hamm as Superman?

Like promised, the rumor mill is spinning like crazy as to who will be the next Superman. We all know the script is written (Nolan/Goyer), but we’ve still haven’t gotten any confirmation or real news about the future film. We’ve heard that Brandon Routh would love to come back. We’ve heard that Chuck’s Zachary Levi was being considered for the role (rumor already shot down). So, today we’ve got news that WB Bros. is seriously considering Jon Hamm.

ScreenRant reports:

According to our friends at Think Mcfly Think, one candidate for the gig is fan-favorite Jon Hamm of Mad Men fame.

TMT’s source claims that Warner Bros. has “seriously considered” Hamm for the role but the actor is 39 years of age, a tough sell if they want to make a franchise out of this (which they do).

  1. Jon Hamm would save Superman. He has the range, screen presscene and ability to play Supes. Why was Reeve good at Superman? It was because he was a trained actor, not some boy who was heading to his Abercrombie and Fitch catalog shoot. Routh will NEVER be Superman in this generation. Welling had already earned the mantle of Superman when Return hit the screen. People wanted to see Welling be Superman, not some monkey faced hack who only got the job because he looked like the guy who played Superman before we were born. With Smallville coming to an end and Welling deciding to move on to being a producer, it’s a perfect time to reintroduce Superman.

Jon Hamm is 39, sure, but Superman is the father of all superheroes. He is the oldest and the first. He inspired all other DC–every Superhero, but DC superheroes look up to Superman as their inspiration, while Marvel heros can’t say Superman inspired them–superhero. He shouldn’t look younger than Bale, he should be in his age group (Bale is 36). He should be as good an actor, if not better, than Christian Bale. Routh can’t act! Supes needs an actor, not some model look-alike trying to do his best Reeve imitation.

    1. I agree completely. One the same note Daniel Craig first played James Bond in Casino Royale at 38, and it was an origin story. A great actor will make a big difference.

  2. Screw age, this is the first guy on a LOOOONG time that looked at the article and said “THATS’ Superman!”

Get him in the gym for 6 months and watch him rock the part!

  3. I am against routh coming back as supes. his performance was creepy. he didn’t play superman. he played christopher reeves playing superman. which imo came off as extremely creepy.

  4. Don Draper as Superman? That’s insane. He looks too old. At least he’s got a deeper look to him. Something that Superman has missed since the black and white days.

  5. I think it would be interesting to see an older Superman, with older supporting characters or even a Superman who has outlived the supporting cast around him, a fururistic Metropolis and a fresh angle on where the films have been before.

  6. age is not a problem. downey was over 43 as Iron Man in 2008. he’s a great actor, so he nailed it. Hamm is a seriously good actor, I’m sure he’d be awesome. been thinking about it for a while, after a non successful superman by brandon routhe, why not Jon Hamm? and please don’t ever consider that chuck guy. don’t ever. he can’t act. if this one will be in the hand of nolan, they really should consider a serious actor.

jon hamm is not too old, we need a very charismatic figure for our superguy. seriously

  7. Nahh….Hamm looks too old. Routh was a great fit and was as close as you get to the beloved Christopher Reeve. I know he was just an actor and these roles shouldn’t be defined by the actors BUT SHIT! if Reeves wasn’t Supe’s too all of us! and changing it again would be a little off (Batman is a different story altogether we were already subjected to the 5 different guys or whatever!) But Superman should be handled differently IMO and bringing Routh back shouldn’t be a huge deal or confusing in any way..

    my 2 cents

    1. Routh was nothing more than Bizarro. He’ll never be Superman in my generation, he’s just a basterdized Christopher Reeve. Reeve was Superman in the 70s and 80s, like how Keaton was Batman of the 80s and 90s. Bale is now Batman, AND HAMM should be Superman. Enough of these “I love Christopher Reeve” movies, Donner’s Superman hasn’t been profitable since 1980’s Superman 2. Clearly, the audience doesn’t care if Reeve or a Reeve look a like (Routh) plays Superman.

      Save Superman!

Give us Hamm or give us DEATH!

  8. Maybe with a lot of makeup work or a hell of an exercise routine you could get rid of those massive lines and jowls that show up when he has any expression except calm disdain. Routh was a lot better, just handicapped by having to literally fill Reeve’s shoes. Let him be his own Superman and see if the result is not a lot better.

  9. I thought Jon Ham would have made a better Captain America but age was an issue there as well. Not against Hamm as Supes, as many have suggested I am tired of the whole Lex Luthor storyline. Sorry, I find repeating the Lex Luthor storylines over and over even more retarded than the age issue.

I know Lex is supposed to be Supes greatest foe, but quite frankly I have seen enough of Lex Luthor to last me a lifetime. Supes really needs some new villains to stir interest in the movie franchise again.

Brandon Routh is terrible, find someone else.

  10. Looking at the photo and the alex ross painting reference in the background I can see Hamm potraying the Man of Steel. And as far as his age I don’t think that should make much of a difference. Robert Downy Jr is around his forties and was in good shape taking on a physical role of Iron Man. Even he was in a suit of armor, it still demanded that be in top physical shape I’m sure he was sweating his ass off wearing that thing. And also look at Stallone, sixty something years old and friggin ripped coming out in an action movie. So I don’t think Hamm’s age should be an issue. If can play a mature Supes and have the physical prowess to potray him I say go for it. Routh did an ok job as Supes but I really didn’t like the way they designed the costume, the colors were too dark and something about those bikini briefs?

  11. Hamm would make an excellent choice. I’m not worried about the tights. They can make him look good — tights or not. Actually, it’s kind of hard to make him look bad…

If they don’t go Hamm — or don’t go with someone who would present a very different Superman — then they may as well go with Routh. He wasn’t what was wrong with Superman Returns. In fact, I’d go so far as to say he was one of the very few things that was *right* with Superman Returns and helped make the darn thing worth watching. I’m all for a different Superman if they want the character played differently, but if they want a classic Superman, I find a hard time believing they’d find too many people who could both look and act the part better.

  12. I agree with the studio. Hamm is to old IMO. If Route is out of the running. I think someone like Matthew Bomer would fit better. Maybe even Henry Cavill.

  13. I like Hamm for the role. But the age does worry me. It will take seven years to do the Batman trilogy when it’s all said and done. I’m sorry 47 or 48 is too old. And too the person who mentionend Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. isn’t wearing a pair of tights he’s in a cool ass suit of armor. And twenties isn’t too young for Superman. Christopher Reeves was in his mid twenties when he played Superman. It all depends on the look of the actor. I still think Matthew Goode would make a good Superman. He’s kind of in that Bale mold but with a classic Clark Kent look.

    1. Not really…

      47/48 would be okay… and who’s to say they’ll make a trilogy?

Does everything really have to be a trilogy? Is there three stories to tell? Would it be horrible if they just did one really good movie, or two?

  14. Hamm would be a perfect fit if they don’t do an origin story, which I hope they don’t do. We all know the origin and the original Superman was good enough. They need to move forward with this franchise and really REALLY deliver. Either Zodd or Brainiac for the villain….NOT Luthor. Also, if they do use Hamm I don’t want to see salt and pepper hairstyle for Superman. I’ve always perceived Superman to have that hairstyle in his late 50’s early 60’s and there’s no need to go in that direction.

  15. This would work. If they did a trilogy Hamm wouldn’t be older than 48 when it was all said and done. He is one of the best actors out there and would nail this part. A 25 year old just won’t cuti it for Superman, you need someone who is very mature to make it believable. Robert Downey Jr is probably 45 and that seems to be working well.

  16. I can kind of see this guy as Superman. I mean, we do want something different. I liked Routh as S, but I think it’s time to revamp it a bit. I smidge grittier.

      1. He’s a boyscout because of his morals and his unwavering devotion to truth and justice. Which has nothing to do with the tone of the movie. They can put Superman in a impossible situation. Forcing him to make a choice to do whats right or do what is necessary.

What would really be cool is if he gets pushed to his limit and rages out making his eyes glow red. Then coming to his senses at the last minute. Kingdom Come did a good job at portraying that.

      2. he can be a boyscout in a gritty world. I agree with Rob D. I’d like to see him be pushed to the limit. thats why a Superman Returns 2 would have been cool if they would kill his son in the first 15 minutes of the movie and have go nuts!

    1. Typically, I don’t agree with Rodney but in this case he’s right. Although I kinda like the idea it would really go against the nature of Superman. Remember, Batman calls him boy scout all the time. That’s just who he is. I would like to see Superman show some anger and rage against the villain. I think thats something we should see.

  17. If they are going for an older Superman, Id be interested to see Hamm given a shot, I just hope the give due diligence to the process and find the guy that works best for the story. Elder Nolan will have final say on casting I would think, and he has nailed everything he’s touched so Im not too worried.

  18. I think Routh was an excellent Supes but the reason why not a lot of people consider it that great is because no one wants to see supes fight lex unless the dude has on future alternate earth armor. Get Darkseed or someone hardcore. I men Zod would be epic too but enough of the sugar coated corny villians.

    1. That was *a* reason, not *the* reason. The world’s worst storyline ever — the whole thing with the son — was right up there, as was the abysmally bad Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane.

I didn’t even so much have a problem with Lex as I did the fact that it was Lex Luther going after the very same thing Lex Luther’s gone after a million times… land. If they made Lex Luther the villain who found out Superman came back and was just out for revenge… that could have been more interesting. But given their last fail there… I’d be happy to see no Lex Luther the next several Superman movies.
