Stallone Talks Rambo Prequel

Last time we heard, there was a rumor that Stallone was pondering a Rambo 5. Originally, it was going to be about a kidnap thriller, that then jumped into a sci-fi “Predator” story, with Rambo hunting a weird creature; a “government experiment gone wrong”. Thankfully that whole crazy plot was scratched. Stallone, who is currently making the rounds for his upcoming action release, The Expendables, was asked about that still possible Rambo 5, or a more plausible Rambo 0.
JoBlo reports:
On Rambo 5:
“The character came full circle [in the fourth film]; he went home. For Rambo to go on another adventure might be misinterpreted as a mercenary gesture and not necessary.”
On Rambo Prequel:
“I certainly think this is worth pondering,” was his response. “It’s intriguing to find the whys and wherefores of how people have become what they are. The traumas, the loss and the tragedy of being in Vietnam would certainly be a great challenge for a young actor, and it would be ironic that Rambo directs younger Rambo having played it for twenty years plus…”
I enjoyed both of Stallone’s last efforts for Rambo and Rocky. Both had great endings; coming full circle for both stories. I’m all against any more sequels to both of this great franchises. That said, I’m all in favor of Stallone taking a stab at telling the story of young John Rambo. That, I would be interested in watching. Who was John Rambo before he became the Rambo we all met in First Blood? Maybe Stallone can direct a young actor, and set a film that tells us about John’s early years. He can go back to the Vietnam War, and tell us what happened to John there. That would be cool. If he can manage to maintain the mood the last Rambo had, this prequel thing does have potential.
What do you guys think? Do you want a Rambo 0? Or a Rambo 5?

I have yet to see the Rambo films, but I suppose if it’s true that Rambo leaves off with a perfect ending, then yeah the best way to move forward is sometimes to go backwards. Perhaps a 2 film deal. I’m not saying it has to be 2 films or even 3. But at least with say a 2 film deal, they can spread the story out and they wouldn’t have to worry about possibly getting too much into one film alone. Two films can allow for proper character interactions and also allow the ‘transformation’ to be perfected.
Rambo I is not like the others at all. He is basically a drifter walking up the north western part of oregon and some asshole cop picks on him. When he gets thrown in jail he flips out and its a game between him and the man. the rest are cool but have no real plot other then rambo is so fucking badass that someone always needs him.
That’s why I’ve never had any interest in the other Rambo movies despite loving First Blood. I didn’t see a point other than money.
LOL @Fred Flintstone
I think Shia Labeouf could play a young rambo.. Jk
They shouldn’t make any more . No one can live up to Stallone’s character.
Milo Ventimilia was great as his son in Rocky Balboa, I think he’d make a great young Rambo
I second the Milo Ventimilia vote…. All we need is a little bulker Milo and hey with Heroes canned he should have a little time on his hands…
for the guy who said he hasnt seen any of the rambo’s. Why you leave a response go watch them then come back. So no this is not a good idea im tired of these remakes or prequels. leave it alone leave his back story a mystery cuz all there going to do is fuck it up i.e. wolverine orgins. plus do you really wanna see taylor lauthner as john rambo cuz thats wat will happen.
A prequel isn’t needed. We have enough backstory from First Blood and Rambo First Blood II. Some things are lest best to the imagination. I was starting to like the Rambo V idea about Rambo rescuing a kid who was kidnapped by drug loads/humman traffickers. Starting to. Then I wondered if instead of Rambo, it should be Ray Tango, along with his cop buddy, Gabriel Cash…
It would be an interesting concept to look into John Rambo’s early years. Just fresh and green straight out of training. But I wonder who would have the cojones big enough to fill in those military boots of Rambo? If Stallone was to direct a prequel I’m sure he would have some strict guidlines as to what he wants from an actor to represent the character he created years ago. So I don’t think we would end up with someone who we think to be unworthy of Rambo. But I would like to see a prequel, not sure about 3D since I’m not a huge fan of this current trend.
I’m still rooting for Rambo vs warewolves………
The last Rambo movie they made was one of the most fantastically intense movies I have ever seen. I love Stallone’s films. The Expendables can’t come soon enough, and whatever Stallone does after that, I will support fully. Rambo prequel or not.
Why bother, the Rambo movies are fine as they are allowing audiences to imagine what may have happened to John before we first met him. We don’t need a prequel to fill in any gaps because telling us what has happened can make the way we relate to John change.
uh-oh! Let me guess, your one of those people that relies on the gimmick (and/or Action) of a movie to entertain you, rather than the story itself. Big Surprise that something new comes around and the brain dead masses come in to defend it.
Sorry a little cranky right now lol, all that I’m saying is that you shouldn’t focus on just the gimmick that a new medium offers.
Soggie, I’m pretty certain Fred is being sarcastic in his comment. Who’d want to watch a 3D Rambo movie anyway.
Instead of Rambo Vs MacGuffin…
How about a new character Vs said MacGuffin? Hollywood will die if new generations of actors are not brought from the D list to the C list to the B List.
Arnie, Stallone, Van Damme, and more were brought up this way…but the way Hollywood is pushing these tentpole franchise movies, is killing the would be B movie hits of yesteryear…
There’s Something About Mary, A Fish Called Wanda, and Stand By Me would be out of theaters in 3 weeks if they were released today…
I reiterate Rambo’s arc is done…move on.
I think Rambo in 4D would be even better. I want to smell all the simulated murder.
The most interesting aspect of a Rambo prequel would be the interaction of Col. Trautman and a young Rambo. Trautman is the key he would be the focual point of any prequel since he “made” Rambo. That is the most important character for the Rambo prequel. How he recognized, trained, molded and mentored Rambo into what he is the, perfect warrior. That is the part of the story that i want to see come alive on the big screen.
