Weekend Boxoffice Report March 12th -14th

This week I didn’t get out to the movies at all, having too much family stuff to take care of. I am sure that my absence was completely at fault for the lack of boxoffice results from anyone who was NOT Alice in Wonderland this week.

Alice of course, continues to woo people to Wonderland, which is likely the reason other films have suffered. That and for the most part since St Patrick’s Day is on a Monday this year, there was plenty of Green Beer to be ingested at bars everywhere. My conclusion? People who don’t drink beer, go to Alice in Wonderland. Ok, beer might have a bit to do with that logic. But there it is.

Alice in Wonderland $62,000,000 2 wks
Green Zone $14,500,000 Opening
She’s Out of my League $9,600,000 Opening
Remember Me $8,300,000 Opening
Shutter Island $8,140,000 4 wks

I wasn’t surprised that Bourne 3.5 (Green Zone) was that popular this weekend. but with all the marketing and hoopla surrounding She’s Out of my League I was really shocked that this didn’t rake. Hopefully this doesn’t score as a knock against Jay Baruchel who I would like to see grow into bigger roles.

The surprise hit I am hearing about is a lot of people commenting that Remember Me is quite good. I figured it would get a lot of attention from its heartthrob star Rob Pattinson, but there is a lot of positive reactions from this. Many which I am reading from Twhaters struggling to admit that they actually like Pattinson in a romance film.

Did any of you see Remember Me? Was it as good as I am hearing?

Remember me really shocked me as to how great it was. When I came in and saw the first scene I thought I would hate it, but this movie was brilliant. I’m not crazy about Robert Patterson but I have to admit he nailed this role and showed me that he deserve’s his spotlight at the top after this roll, not twilight. It’s sad a movie like this isn’t doing as well as it should be in the numbers, because this story was amazing, flowed so well, and I thought about it the rest of the weekend it had such an impact. I don’t know how else to describe it beside’s that it was brilliant.

The acting just couldn’t get any better, it flowed so well, aspecially after seeing their accents in the interviews, I was surprised how well they both pulled it off. I thought they were just being themselve’s it seemed so effortless, I didn’t know they were hiding their accents and really just getting into their rolls.

user reviews are good. but the critics bashed it.

    Boston Globe
Wesley Morris “…the movie crassly repurposes tragedy to excuse its cliches.” more… D-

    Chicago Tribune
Michael Phillips “The dialogue can drive you crazy with its self-consciousness.” more… C

    E! Online
Leslie Gornstein “Tear-jerking histrionics squarely aimed at the high-school set, with turgid pacing, a borderline offensive ending and performances ranging from overblown to vaudevillian.” more… D

    Entertainment Weekly
Lisa Schwarzbaum “…a shameless contraption of ridiculously sad things befalling attractive people…” more… D+

    New York Post
Kyle Smith “…wants to make us think of Holden Caulfield, but it’s far closer to Nicholas Sparks.” more… D

    New York Times
    Manohla Dargis “…lugubrious…” more… D

    Reelviews
James Berardinelli “…represents Robert Pattinson’s attempt to prove he can do more than sparkle like a faux vampire, but the case he presents is not convincing.” more… C

    Rolling Stone
Peter Travers “It’s all weepy drool until the twist ending, which turns it shockingly offensive.” more… D

She’s out of my league was actually very good and I was surprised that positive reviews didn’t give the film a much needed boost on Saturday and Sunday. The humor of the film reminded me a lot of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I think more so than Jay Baruchel, T.J. Miller’s career is going to take off because of how hilarious he was in this movie.

The Patterson kid seems to have chops, saw a clip of that new movie and he seemed in place, Im not one to hate on a dude just cause of Twighlight(never seen any)if he can act, it’s all well.

Now Shark-Boy is another story alltogether.

still not feeling compelled to see Burton & co. this time out (dont know why)

Just a minor correction for you, Rodney. St. Patrick’s Day isn’t until Wednesday, March. 17. Sorry, but I’m a perfectionist about stuff like that.

Also, Alice in Wonderland is just awesome, so that probably has more to do with people going to see it than whether or not they drink beer. ;)
